1978 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championships
The 1978 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championships were the 40th annual cross country meet to determine the team and individual national champions of NCAA Division I men's collegiate cross country running in the United States. Held on November 20, 1978, the meet was hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Madison at the Yahara Hills Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin. The distance for this race was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). All Division I cross country teams were eligible to qualify for the meet through their placement at various regional qualifying meets. In total, 29 teams and 241 individual runners contested this championship. The team national championship was won by the UTEP Miners, their fourth title. The individual championship was won by Alberto Salazar, from Oregon, with a time of 29:29.70. Indiana Hoosiers Men's Cross Country
The Indiana Hoosiers are the intercollegiate sports teams and players of Indiana University Bloomington, named after the colloquial term for people from the state of Indiana. The Hoosiers participate in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 24 sports and became a member of the Big Ten Conference on December 1, 1899. The Cal Poly Mustangs are the sport, athletic teams representing California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Donald Gene Clary Jr. (born July 29, 1957) is an American former long-distance runner who competed mainly in 5000 meters and cross country running. He represented the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics and competed three times at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, taking a junior title in 1975 and a senior team silver medal in 1980. He was the 3000 meters silver medallist at the 1985 IAAF World Indoor Games. Career Don Clary was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1975. Cleveland State Vikings Men's Cross Country
The Cleveland State Vikings, or Vikes, are the athletic teams of Cleveland State University. Before as Fenn College they were known as the Fenn College Foxes or Fenn Foxes. Cleveland State competes in NCAA Division I. The Vikings have competed in NCAA Division I since 1972. They were previously members of the NCAA College Division, a precursor to NCAA Division II. The university is a member of the Horizon League (1994–present), the Mid-American Conference (2019–present) for wrestling, and the ASUN Conference (2021–present) for men's lacrosse. Marc Hunter (athlete)
Marc Hunter (born March 5, 1956) is an American former distance runner. He ran for the United States at the 1978 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He is the father of Drew Hunter. Running career High school Hunter attended Brunswick High School in Ohio, where he graduated in 1974. During his time in high school, he competed in cross country and track. He was the runner-up at Ohio's 1972 state cross country meet, and then won the 1973 state cross meet. He was also the Ohio High School DI State champion in the mile in 1973 and 1974. As a high schooler, he recorded a personal best of 4:14 in the mile. Collegiate Hunter spent his first two years at Kent State University where he led the Golden Flashes to back-to-back NCAA Cross Country Championship meets. Suleiman Nyambui
Suleiman Nyambui (born February 13, 1953) is a former track athlete from Tanzania who specialized in various long-distance disciplines. Nyambui won the bronze medal at the 1978 All-Africa Games, the silver medal in 5000 metres at the 1980 Summer Olympics, and finished first at three consecutive marathons between 1987 and 1988. Thom Hunt (born March 17, 1958) is a retired Long-distance running, distance runner who specialized in various events from the 1500 meters to the marathon. He represented the United States in international competition and was particularly prolific in cross country running. He was the junior runner-up at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1976 and won in 1977. He currently coaches Women's Cross Country at Cuyamaca College. Michael Musyoki (born May 28, 1956) is a retired long-distance runner from Kenya. He won the bronze medal in 10,000 metres at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
