1978 NCAA Division II Soccer Championship
The 1978 NCAA Division II Soccer Championship was the sixth annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. In a rematch of the previous year's final, Seattle Pacific defeated defending champions Alabama A&M in the final, 1–0 (after two overtime periods), to win their first national title and their first after losing their previous three appearances in Division II championship matches (1974, 1975, 1977). The final was played at Florida International University in Miami, Florida on December 2, 1978. NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship
The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship is the annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. It has been played annually since 1972; prior to then, all teams competed in a single class. The most successful program has been Southern Connecticut State, with six national titles. The current champion are Franklin Pierce, who won their first national title in 2022, defeating CSU Pueblo, 2–0, in the final. Format The Division II tournament is structured around four unbalanced Super Regionals from the eight NCAA regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast, and West). At least two and as many as six teams from each region are selected with no automatic qualifiers given. San Francisco State Gators Men's Soccer
The San Francisco State Gators are the athletic teams that compete at San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. The nickname applies to the college's intercollegiate NCAA Division II teams. The nickname was published in the student newspaper, "The Leaf", but was long referred to in media alternatively as the "Staters" and the "Golden Gaters". The use of Gaters eventually evolved into the Gators as known today. The Gators have had a total of 275 athletes earn All-American honors and 34 athletes earn Academic All-American honors. 14 Gators have earned an individual national title in their respective sport. The 1978 NAIA Soccer Championship was the 20th annual tournament held by the NAIA to determine the national champion of men's college soccer among its members in the United States and Canada. Defending champions Quincy (IL) defeated Alabama–Huntsville in the final, 2–0, to claim the Hawks' eighth NAIA national title. The final was played in Huntsville, Alabama. The 1978 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament was the 20th organized men's college soccer tournament by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, to determine the top college soccer team in the United States. The San Francisco Dons won their fourth national title, although it was later revoked by the NCAA, by defeating the Indiana Hoosiers in the championship game, 2–0. Overtime (sports)
Overtime or extra time is an additional period of play specified under the rules of a sport to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament. The rules of overtime or extra time vary between sports and even different competitions. Some may employ " sudden death", where the first player or team who scores immediately wins the game. In others, play continues until a specified time has elapsed, and only then is the winner declared. The Loyola Greyhounds men's soccer team represents Loyola University Maryland in NCAA Division I association football, soccer. It became a member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2013. Previously it competed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) from 1989 to 2013. The FIU Panthers men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of Florida International University. As of the upcoming 2022 season, the team is a member of the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference (The American). History FIU started their soccer program in 1972.
