1978 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1978 Eisenhower Trophy took place 18 to 21 October at the Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club in Navua, Viti Levu, Fiji. It was the 11th World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 24 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. United States won the Eisenhower Trophy for the seventh time, finishing 13 strokes ahead of the silver medalists, Canada. Australia took the bronze medal, five strokes further behind, while New Zealand finished fourth. Bobby Clampett, United States, had the lowest individual score, one-under-par 287. After the 1974 Eisenhower Trophy was moved from Malaysia to the Dominican Republic, the 1978 event had been allocated to the Asia/Australasia zone with the 1980 event allocated to the American zone and the 1982 event to the Europe/Africa zone. The 1974 Eisenhower Trophy took place 30 October to 2 November at the Casa de Campo in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It was the ninth World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 35 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. The United States won the Eisenhower Trophy for the fourth successive time, finishing 10 strokes ahead of the silver medalists, Japan. Brazil took the bronze medal while South Africa finished fourth. Doug Roxburgh (born December 28, 1951) is a Canadian accountant, amateur golfer, and golf administrator. He has won the Canadian Amateur Championship four times, the B.C. Amateur Championship a record 13 times, and is a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Roxburgh was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He learned golf as a youth, and was runner-up in the Canadian Junior Championship in 1967 at age 15. He scored his first important success in the 1969 B.C. Gary Cowan
Gary Cowan (born October 28, 1938) is a Canadian golfer who has achieved outstanding results at the highest class in amateur competition. Biography Cowan was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. He began to play golf at the municipal golf course, Rockway, in Kitchener, and found great rivalries there with such excellent players as Moe Norman and Gerry Kesselring. The three were coached by Lloyd Tucker. Cowan reached the semi-finals of the Ontario Amateur Championship at age 17 in 1956, a record for a player so young. He won the 1956 Canadian Junior Championship. His first national championship victory at men's level was the 1961 Canadian Amateur Championship, which was to be his only win, but he reached the finals on four other occasions (1959, 1960, 1964, 1968), and finished second at stroke play twice more (1974, 1978). Peter Henry Sweeney (born 25 September 1984) is a Scottish football manager, coach and former professional player. Sweeney played as a midfielder and began his career at Millwall where he progressed through their youth team and broke into the first team. He played in the 2004 FA Cup Final were Millwall lost 3–0 to Manchester United. He joined Stoke City in the summer of 2005 for a fee of £250,000 but his start at Stoke was hampered by injuries. He struggled to fully recover and after spending time out on loan at Yeovil Town and Walsall he joined Leeds United in January 2008. Anthony Yale Gresham (born 4 December 1940) is an Australian amateur golfer. He won the 1977 Australian Amateur and represented Australia in seven successive Eisenhower Trophy events between 1968 and 1980. He also won two professional events, the 1975 New South Wales Open (golf), New South Wales Open and the 1978 South Australian Open (golf), South Australian Open. Golf career Gresham reached four finals of the Australian Amateur, although he only won once, beating Chris Bonython at the 40th hole in 1977. Christopher Stephen Bonython (born 13 October 1947) is an Australian amateur golfer. He won the 1975 Australian Amateur and represented Australia in two Eisenhower Trophy events, in 1976 and 1978. Early life Bonython was born in Medindie, Adelaide, on 13 October 1947, the son of Kym Bonython and his first wife Jean. Golf career Bonython won the 1975 Australian Amateur beating the defending champion, Terry Gale, by one hole in the final. They were level after 35 holes, but Bonython holed a 40-foot putt at the last to win. He reached the final again in 1977 where playing Tony Gresham, in another close match, he lost at the 40th hole, with Gresham holing a long putt. He was also a medalist in 1976. Luis Carbonetti
Luis Guillermo Carbonetti (born 23 April 1953) is an Argentine professional golfer. He is the brother of golfer Horacio Carbonetti. Carbonetti was born in Río Cuarto, Córdoba. As an amateur, he played on five Eisenhower Trophy teams and won the individual title twice (1982 and 1984). He turned pro in 1984. Carbonetti won the Argentine Tour Order of Merit in 1985 and Cordoba Tour Order of Merit 2002. He also played on the European Tour in the 1980s and 1990s. His best finishes on tour were a pair of T-7 in 1989 at the Lancia Italian Open and Torras Monte Carlo Open.
