1978 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 30 March 1978 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly. The result was a victory for the Cook Islands Party (CIP) of Premier Albert Henry, which won 15 of the 22 seats. The Democratic Party won the remaining seven seats. Following the elections, the Democratic Party challenged the results, claiming Henry had used public funds to subsidise flights that brought expatriate CIP supporters back to the Cook Islands to vote, which cost around $300,000. The election of nine CIP MPs was subsequently overturned by an electoral court, allowing Democratic Party leader Tom Davis – who had lost his seat before being reinstated as a result of the ruling – to become Premier. Henry was subsequently convicted of conspiracy and misuse of public money, and later stripped of his knighthood. Early general elections were held in the Cook Islands on 3 December 1974. The result was a victory for the ruling Cook Islands Party (CIP), which won 14 of the 22 seats in the Legislative Assembly with 64% of the vote. The Democratic Party won the remaining eight seats. CIP leader Albert Henry remained Premier. Background The early elections were called by Henry following a visit to New Zealand for the funeral of Prime Minister Norman Kirk, stating that he also wanted to hold a vote on self-government or integration into New Zealand. A planned referendum would have seen voters given the options of independence, self-government or integration. However, the referendum plans were later dropped. Campaign Henry's government refused to allow the three thousand Cook Islanders living in New Zealand to vote by post, most of whom were expected to vote for the Democratic Party. Elections In The Cook Islands
The Cook Islands elects a legislature on a national level. The Parliament of the Cook Islands has 24 members, elected for a four-year term in single-seat constituencies. The Cook Islands has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties and it is extremely difficult for any other party to achieve electoral success. An election was held on 14 June 2018. The Cook Islands Party lost its majority, winning only 10 of 24 seats, but Prime Minister Henry Puna was able to put together a coalition by offering cabinet positions to the One Cook Islands Movement's George Angene and independents Robert Tapaitau and Rose Toki-Brown. The titis, or titi monkeys, are New World monkeys of the subfamily Callicebinae, which contains three extant genera: ''Cheracebus'', ''Callicebus'', and ''Plecturocebus.'' Tangaroa Tangaroa
Sir Tangaroa Tangaroa (6 May 1921 – 23 May 2009) was a Cook Islands politician. Born as the only child to Akaruke and Puna, he helped raise his wife's children. He started his professional life as a government radio operator (1939–1954). In 1955 he became a shipping clerk which he remained until 1963 Tangaroa was elected in 1958 to the country's first Legislative Assembly, and subsequently served as member for Penrhyn in the Parliament of the Cook Islands until 1983. In 1969 to 1970, he was the leader of the now-defunct United Cook Islanders party. Tangaroa later became a member of the Democratic Party, and he served in Democratic Party Cabinets in the late 1970s. In 1985, he was the first Cook Islander to be appointed Queen's Representative. He held the position until 1990, when he was succeeded by Apenera Short. Vincent Ingram
Alfred Kura Taratu Ingram (10 July 1946 – 6 June 2010) was a Cook Islands politician and Cabinet Minister. Ingram was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and initially raised in Samoa and then Rarotonga. He was educated at Avarua Side School, and then Mt Albert Grammar School in Auckland for his secondary education. He studied law, and was accepted to the bar in New Zealand in 1974, and the Cook Islands in 1975. Ingram joined the Cook Islands Democratic Party in the 1970s, and along with Norman George was active in fundraising for the party in New Zealand. He was elected to the Cook Islands Parliament in the 1978 election, and served in the administration of Tom Davis as Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Police and the Minister of Justice. After falling out with Davis in 1983, he crossed the floor, and served as Leader of the Opposition between 1984 and 1986. Pupuke Robati
Sir Pupuke Robati, KBE (9 April 1925 – 26 April 2009) was a Cook Island politician. He served as Prime Minister of the Cook Islands from 29 July 1987 to 1 February 1989. Robati was from the island of Rakahanga. He completed his primary and secondary schooling in Manihiki and Rarotonga. He studied medicine at the Fiji School of Medicine and graduated as a surgeon in 1948. On returning to the Cook Islands, he worked in Rarotonga, Mangaia, and Atiu, eventually rising to be director of public health. In 1966, he received training from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Otago in New Zealand and graduated with a Diploma of Public Health. Political career Robati was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Cook Islands in the 1965 election as an independent representing the district of Rakahanga.
