1978 Chicago Marathon
The 1978 Chicago Marathon (also known as the Mayor Daley Marathon) was the 2nd running of the annual marathon race in Chicago, United States and was held on September 24. The elite men's and women's races were won by Americans Mark Stanforth (2:19:20) and Lynae Larson (2:59:25). The race was run in temperatures at times above , which caused hundreds of competitors to need medical attention. Background The entry for the 1978 race was increased from $5 the previous year to $10, making it the most expensive US marathon race to enter at the time. The money covered the race organizer's cost of between $200,000 and $250,000 for the race. He had lost $65,000 from the 1977 event. The winners received no prize money, which was not introduced until 1982. Boston Marathon
The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon race hosted by several cities and towns in greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts, United States. It is traditionally held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. Begun in 1897, the event was inspired by the success of the first marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics.
