1977–78 Biathlon World Cup
The 1977–78 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the UIPMB ( Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon). The season started on 13 January 1978 in Ruhpolding, West Germany, and ended in April 1978 in Sodankylä, Finland. It was the first ever season of the Biathlon World Cup, and it was only held for men. Frank Ullrich
Frank Ullrich (, ; born 24 January 1958) is a German politician of the SPD and former biathlete and trainer of the German national team. Since 2021, he has been a member of the Bundestag. Career Biathlon was in Ullrich's family as his father was a biathlon referee. His first appearance was in 1967 at the East Germany, GDR Children Championships. In 1972, he placed second over 5 km at the Spartakiad, in 1975 he became Youth World Champion in relay race, relay. He won a bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics with the 4 × 7.5 km relay team. At the 1980 Winter Olympics he won 3 medals with silvers in the 20 km individual and the 4 × 7.5 km relay and a gold medal in the 10 km sprint, an event he dominated at world level between 1978 and 1981. In 1982 his wife fell ill and died, soon after which he switched to training. Sigleif Johansen (born 25 October 1948, in Tana) is a former Norwegian biathlete. Heikki Ikola
Heikki Johannes Ikola (born 9 September 1947) is a Finnish former biathlete. Together with his countryman Juhani Suutarinen he became dominant in the 1970s and the early 1980s. In 1975 he became double world champion in both the 20 km and the relay. He also won the sprint title in 1977 and 1981. Nowadays Ikola works as a commentator for Finnish channel Yle. Anatoly Alyabyev
Anatoly Nikolayevich Alyabyev (russian: Анато́лий Никола́евич Аля́бьев; 12 December 1951 – 11 January 2022) was a Soviet biathlete. Life and career Alyabyev was born in the village of Danilkovo, Velsky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast. He initially trained at Children and Youth Sport School of Spartak in Vologda, but competed as a senior while training at the Armed Forces sports society in Leningrad. At the 1980 Olympics he was, together with Frank Ullrich the dominant biathlete taking gold medals in the 20 km and on the relay and bronze in the 10 km. Alyabyev best season came in 1980–1981, when he became second overall. Alyabyev was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980). He graduated from Lesgaft Military Institute of Physical Culture in 1981 and defended a dissertation for the Candidate of Pedagogical Science degree in 1997. Odd Lirhus
Odd Lirhus (born 18 September 1956) is a former Norwegian biathlete. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo he won a silver medal in the relay. He also won a gold medal in the 20 km individual at the 1978 Biathlon World Championship. In addition, he won the 20 km individual in Falun in the 1983–84 season. After that season, Lirhus took a gap year as an active biathlete to be a coach for the Canadian biathlon team, intending to return to biathlon and compete at the World Championships in Holmenkollen. He did not, however, return. From 2002 to 2005, Lirhus was the head coach for Norwegian women's biathlon team. Vladimir Barnashov
Vladimir Mikhaylovich Barnashov (russian: Владимир Михайлович Барнашов; born 26 February 1951) is a Soviet former biathlete. Life and career Barnashov was born in the village of Ryazany, Muromtsevsky District, Omsk Oblast He trained at Dynamo sports society and was a member of the USSR National Biathlon Team from 1977. At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid he won a gold medal with the Soviet relay team. He was also a bronze medalist in the USSR 4 × 7.5 km relay team at the 1979, 1981 and 1982 Biathlon World Championships. In the overall World Cup he came third overall in the 1978–79 season behind Klaus Siebert and Frank Ullrich. He was a coach of the USSR National Biathlon Team between 1984 and 1992, training six Olympic Champions in biathlon and becoming the Honoured Trainer of the USSR in 1988.
