1977 US Open – Women's Singles
Two-time defending champion Chris Evert defeated Wendy Turnbull in the final, 7–6, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1977 US Open. It was her third US Open title and her seventh major singles title overall. Chris Evert
Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954), known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. Evert won 18 major singles titles, including a record seven French Open titles and a joint-record six US Open titles (tied with Serena Williams). She was ranked world No. 1 for 260 weeks, and was the year-end world No. 1 singles player seven times (1974–78, 1980, 1981). Alongside Martina Navratilova, her greatest rival, Evert dominated women's tennis in the 1970s and 1980s. Evert reached 34 major singles finals, the most in history. Nancy Richey
Nancy Richey (born August 23, 1942) is an American former tennis player. Richey won two major singles titles (the 1967 Australian Championships and 1968 French Open) and four major women's doubles titles (the 1965 US Championships, 1966 Australian Championships, 1966 Wimbledon Championships, and 1966 US Championships). She was ranked world No. 2 in singles at year-end in 1969. Richey won 69 singles titles during her career and helped the US win the Federation Cup in 1969. She won the singles title at the U.S. Women's Clay Court Championships a record six consecutive years, from 1963 through 1968. Richey married Kenneth S. Gunter on December 15, 1970. Zenda Liess
Zenda Liess (born December 12, 1959) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Tennis career Liess competed as a junior in Florida, where she attended Spruce Creek High School. She won back to back Orange Bowl titles for the 16s and Under in 1973 and 1974. As a 16-year old she was a quarter-finalist at the 1976 US Open, one of few occasions the tournament had been played on clay, a surface Liess was strong on. In 1977 she won the state championships while at Spruce Creek, then upon graduating played on the professional circuit for three years. Sheila McInerney
Sheila McInerney (born February 22, 1958) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography McInerney is originally from Rome, New York and began playing tennis at the age of eight. A former student at the Rome Free Academy, she later moved to Miami to further her tennis and attended Palmetto High School. She received a tennis scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC Trojans) in 1976. As an amateur, McInerney qualified for the main draw of the 1977 US Open and made it through to the third round, where she was beaten in three sets by Billie Jean King. Mary Carillo (born March 15, 1957) is an American sportscaster and former professional tennis player. She is an analyst for '' Tennis on NBC'' and a reporter for NBC Olympic broadcasts. Career Tennis Carillo played on the women's professional tennis circuit from 1977 to 1980. Her highest world rank was No. 33 in the Women's Tennis Association Rankings from January through March 1980. She then retired, citing knee injuries. Bunny Bruning
Anna-Marie "Bunny" Bruning (born September 5, 1957) is an American former professional tennis player. Bruning grew up in California and was active on the WTA Tour during the 1970s and 1980s. She competed in the main draws of all four grand slam tournaments and was runner-up in the All England Plate, Wimbledon Plate in 1976. Now a resident of Adel, Iowa, Bruning has worked in the region as a tennis coach since leaving professional tennis and is currently Tennis Director of the Wakonda Club in Des Moines. Nina Bohm (born 30 April 1958) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Biography Bohm, a right-handed player from Stockholm, made her Fed Cup debut for Sweden in 1978, against France. Sharon Walsh-Arnold (née Walsh; born February 24, 1952) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Walsh enjoyed a long career, playing her first Grand Slam singles event in 1969 and her last Grand Slam doubles match in 1990. Mareen "Peanut" Louie-Harper (born August 15, 1960) is a retired American tennis player, born in San Francisco, California to Ron and Alice Louie. She was a top-ranked junior tennis player and professional tennis player on the WTA tour. She reached a career high singles ranking of 19 in the world in 1985 and doubles ranking of 31 in the world in 1992. She married Richard Leon Cawley in January 1977, and married William Timothy Cape in October 1986.
