1977 Herbert Pell Cup
The 1977 Herbert Pell Cup was held in Newport, Rhode Island, United States in 1977. The winner, Australia, was awarded the Herbert Pell Cup and went on to challenge for the 1977 America's Cup. In a defenders selection series that was held simultaneously, three boats competed for the right to defend the America's Cup. ''Australia'' (KA–5) is an Australian 12-metre-class America's Cup racing yacht that twice challenged unsuccessfully for the America's Cup in 1977 and 1980. Designed by Ben Lexcen in association with the Dutch designer Johan Valentijn for Alan Bond, ''Australia'' failed to win a single race against the 1977 defender, '' Courageous'' (US-26), but won one race against the 1980 defender, '' Freedom'' (US-30). Gordon Ingate
Gordon Ingate OAM (born 29 March 1926) is an Australian sailor who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics, sailing in the Tempest class keelboat. He also finished a close second overall in the 1972 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, skippering the famous yacht ''Caprice of Huon'', beaten only by USA America's Cup sailor Ted Turner sailing a converted 12-metre, ''American Eagle''. He skippered 12-Metre Gretel II in the 1977 America's Cup but was eliminated by Sweden in the challengers' trials. At the age of 91 he won the Prince Philip Cup/Australian Dragon Class Championship at the Metung Yacht Club in Victoria, held between 7–13 January 2018, racing his yacht ''Whimsical'' with crew Amy Walsh and David Giles. ''Gretel II'' (KA-3) is an International 12-metre class racing yacht built for the America's Cup challenge series in 1970. She was designed by Alan Payne and built by W.H. Barnett for Australian media tycoon Sir Frank Packer. Packer had first challenged for the America's Cup in 1962 with the yacht '' Gretel'', which was named after his wife. Pelle Petterson
Pelle Helmer Petterson (born 31 July 1932) is a Swedish sailor and yacht designer. He is the son of Helmer Petterson and Norwegian-born Borgny Petterson (born Holm), and studied design at the leading Pratt Institute in New York from 1955 through 1957. He is probably best known for designing the Maxi brand of sailing boats, which are still among the most common sailing boats in Swedish waters. He also designed Volvo's successful sports car, the P1800, while he was a student of Pietro Frua. Petterson has three children. There is a line of sailing clothing and sports wear bearing the name Petterson, under the Brand Name ''Pelle P.'' which are designed by his daughter, Cecilia.
