1977 Australian Film Institute Awards
The 1977 Australian Film Awards ceremony, presented by the Australian Film Institute (AFI), honoured the best Australian films of 1976 on 21 September 1977 at Regent Theatre, in Sydney, New South Wales. It was televised on ABC. Actors Keir Dullea and Karen Black, and former Australian Prime Minister John Gorton hosted the show. ''Don's Party'' won six awards including Best Direction and Best Actress. Other winners were ''The Picture Show Man'' with four awards, and '' Storm Boy'' with two awards including Best Film and the Jury Prize. Regent Theatre (Sydney)
The Regent Theatre was a heritage-listed cinema and entertainment venue in George Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, built in 1928 as a flagship for Hoyts, and was demolished in 1988 by property developer Leon Fink. Description and history The Regent Theatre was Hoyts' showcase "picture palace" in Sydney, designed by architect Cedric Ballantyne and built by James Porter & Sons. The 2,297-seat Regent Theatre opened its doors in the heart of the city's entertainment district on 30 March 1928 with ''Flesh and the Devil'', starring Greta Garbo & John Gilbert. The Regent Theatre had a resident 40 piece orchestra, as well as a Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. The theatre was located at 487-503 George Street, Sydney, near the Sydney Town Hall. Charles Chauvel (filmmaker)
Charles Edward Chauvel OBE (7 October 1897 – 11 November 1959) was an Australian filmmaker, producer and screenwriter and nephew of Australian army General Sir Harry Chauvel. He is noted for writing and directing the films '' Forty Thousand Horsemen'' in 1940 and ''Jedda'' in 1955. His wife, Elsa Chauvel, was a frequent collaborator on his filmmaking projects. Early life Family Charles Edward Chauvel was born on 7 October 1897 in Warwick, Queensland, the son of James Allan Chauvel and his wife Susan Isabella (née Barnes), pioneer farmers in the Mutdapilly area. He was the nephew of General Sir Harry Chauvel, Commander of the Australian Light Horse and later the Desert Mounted Corps in Palestine during World War I. John Meillon, ( ; 1 May 1934 – 11 August 1989), was an Australian character actor, known for many straight as well as comedy roles, he became most widely known internationally as Walter Reilly in the films ''Crocodile Dundee'' and ''Crocodile Dundee II''.
