Statistics of Swiss Super League in the 1976–77 season. Overview The Swiss Football Association had reformed the Swiss football league system that year, reducing the number of teams in the Nationalliga A from 14 to 12 and increasing the Nationalliga B teams from 14 to 16. The Nationalliga A season 1976–77 was contested by the first 11 teams from the 1975–76 Nationalliga A, 1975–76 season and the sole promoted team from Nationalliga B AC Bellinzona. The Nationalliga A was played in two stages. The qualification phase was played by all teams in a round robin and after completion was divided into two groups. The first six teams contended in the championship group (with half the obtained points as bonus) and the positions seventh to twelfth contended the relegation group (also with half the obtained points as bonus). Swiss Super League
The Swiss Super League (known as the Credit Suisse Super League for sponsorship reasons) is a Swiss professional league in the top tier of the Swiss football league system and has been played in its current format since the 2003–04 season. As of January 2022, the Swiss Super League is ranked 14th in Europe according to UEFA's ranking of league coefficients, which is based upon Swiss team performances in European competitions. The 2022–23 season will be the 126th season of the Swiss top-flight, making it the longest continuously running top-flight national league. Overview The Super League is played over 36 rounds from the end of July to May, with a winter break from mid-December to the first week of February. BSC Young Boys
BSC Young Boys (YB by short abbreviation ) are a Swiss sports club based in Bern, Switzerland. Its first team has won 15 Swiss league championships and six Swiss Cups. YB is one of the most successful Swiss football clubs internationally, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup in the 1958–59 season. The club's colours are yellow of a golden shade and black. Kurt Müller (footballer)
Kurt "Kudi" Müller (born 9 May 1948) is a Swiss former footballer who was capped on 38 occasions by the Switzerland national football team, scoring eight goals. Müller started his career with FC Emmenbrücke and then played for FC Luzern and Grasshopper Club Zürich. In January 1973, Müller moved to Germany to play club football for Hertha BSC. He went on to make 77 league appearances for the Berlin side over the next two and a half seasons, and in 1974–75 he helped Hertha finish as runners-up in the Bundesliga. After leaving Hertha, Müller returned to Switzerland to play for Servette FC for the 1975–76 season, and he played for them in the final of the 1975 Coppa delle Alpi tournament, in which they defeated FC Basel 3–0. Arthur Von Wartburg
Arthur von Wartburg (born 25 December 1952) is a Swiss international footballer who played most of his football for FC Basel as midfielder. Club career Von Wartburg played his youth football by Concordia Basel and advanced to their first team in 1972. Von Wartburg joined Basel for their 1973–74 season under first team manager Helmut Benthaus. After playing in two test games, he played his domestic league debut for his new club in the home game at St. Jakob Stadium on 20 April 1974 as Basel drew 1–1 against St. Gallen. He scored his first goal for his club on 7 August 1974 in the Swiss League Cup against Luzern as Basel won 5–2. It was the team's 5th goal of the match. Walter Mundschin
Walter Mundschin (born 17 October 1947) is a Swiss former footballer who played as a libero. Club career Born in Sursee, Mundschin played for FC Basel in the Nationalliga A during fourteen seasons between 1965 and 1978. He won the Swiss championship six times, the Swiss Cup twice and the first edition of the Swiss League Cup that was held in 1972. During this entire period he only had one coach, this being Helmut Benthaus. The first time was in Basel's 1966–67 season. In that season Mundschin also won the double with Basel. In the Cup final in the former Wankdorf Stadium on 15 May 1967 Basel's opponents were Lausanne-Sports. Helmut Hauser scored the decisive goal via penalty. The game went down in football history due to the sit-down strike that followed that penalty goal.
