The 1976 United States Senate election in Minnesota took place on November 2, 1976. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Hubert Humphrey won re-election to a fifth term. Gerald Brekke
Gerald Wayne Brekke (September 1, 1922 – March 28, 2006) was a Minnesota politician and educator who ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 1976, Minnesota Secretary of State in 1978, and United States House of Representatives in 2000. He was Assistant Director of Special Projects in the Office of Overseas Dependent Education for the United States Department of Defense from 1974-1975, an appointment made by President Gerald Ford. Brekke was a Professor of Education at Gustavus Adolphus College from 1962 to 1987, where he taught thousands of students and established the Minnesota Student Teachers' Association. After retiring, he became a general contractor, building over forty homes for low-income families in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Brekke served in the 8th Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a reporter for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Hubert Humphrey
Hubert Horatio Humphrey Jr. (May 27, 1911 – January 13, 1978) was an American pharmacist and politician who served as the 38th vice president of the United States from 1965 to 1969. He twice served in the United States Senate, representing Minnesota from 1949 to 1964 and 1971 to 1978. As a senator he was a major leader of modern liberalism in the United States. As President Lyndon B. Johnson's vice president, he supported the controversial Vietnam War. An intensely divided Democratic Party nominated him in the 1968 presidential election, which he lost to Republican nominee Richard Nixon. Born in Wallace, South Dakota, Humphrey attended the University of Minnesota. 1968 Democratic National Convention
The 1968 Democratic National Convention was held August 26–29 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Earlier that year incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson had announced he would not seek reelection, thus making the purpose of the convention to select a new presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. The keynote speaker was Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii. Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine were nominated for president and vice president, respectively. The most contentious issues of the convention were the continuing American military involvement in the Vietnam War and voting reform, particularly expanding the right to vote for draft-age soldiers (age 18) who were unable to vote as the voting age was 21. The secretary of state of Minnesota is a constitutional officer in the executive branch of government of the U.S. State of Minnesota. Twenty-two individuals have held the office of secretary of state since statehood. The incumbent is Steve Simon, a DFLer. Election and term of office The secretary of state is elected by the people on Election Day in November, and takes office on the first Monday of the next January. There is no limit to the number of terms a secretary of state may hold. Roland Riemers
Roland Clifford Riemers (born May 15, 1943) is an American perennial candidate best known for winning the 1996 North Dakota Democratic presidential primary. Early life and career Riemers was born in 1943 in Lake City, Minnesota. He attended San Antonio College, received his AS in nursing from Anoka-Ramsey Community College in 1973, his BS in industrial technology from the University of North Dakota in 1984, and attended but did not graduate from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1998 and 1999. Riemers currently lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and has 8 children. Riemers was an early adopter of solar energy, and in the 1970s built and lived in the first completely solar-powered home in the northern United States.
