1976 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships
The 1976 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships were the 46th NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships to be held. The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona hosted the tournament at the McKale Center. Iowa took home the team championship with 123.25 points and three individual champions. Chuck Yagla of Iowa was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and Herb Calvert of Oklahoma received the Gorriaran Award. College Wrestling
Collegiate wrestling (also known as folkstyle wrestling) is the form of wrestling practiced at the college and university level in the United States. This style of wrestling, with some slight modifications, is also practiced at high school and middle school levels, and also among younger participants. The rules and style of collegiate or folkstyle wrestling differs from other styles of wrestling that are practiced around the world such as those in the Olympic Games, freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. Women's wrestling at the US college level uses two different rulesets. Penn State Nittany Lions
The Penn State Nittany Lions are the athletic teams of Pennsylvania State University, except for the women's basketball team, known as the Lady Lions. The school colors are navy blue and white. Wrestling is a series of combat sports involving grappling-type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. Wrestling techniques have been incorporated into martial arts, combat sports and military systems. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Oregon Ducks
The Oregon Ducks are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Oregon, located in Eugene. Greg Gibson (wrestler)
Gregory P. Gibson (born November 20, 1953) is a retired American wrestler who competed in the heavyweight division (under 100 kg.) He is the only American to win world medals in three styles of wrestling — Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Sambo. While serving with the U.S. Marines, stationed at Quantico, Va., he won a silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Greco-Roman, as well as two silver and a bronze medal in freestyle at the world championships from 1981 to 1983. Background Gibson graduated from Shasta High School in Redding, California in 1972. He went on to wrestle at the University of Oregon where he became a two-time NCAA All-American. Christopher Lundy Campbell (born September 9, 1954) is an American wrestler. He was a bronze medalist in Freestyle wrestling at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He won a gold medal at the 1981 World Wrestling Championships, and a Silver medal at the 1990 World Wrestling Championships. He is the oldest United States wrestler to medal at the Olympic Games. When he won his Olympic medal he was a month away from his 38th birthday. While wrestling for the University of Iowa, Campbell was a three-time All-American and a two-time NCAA champion, winning titles in 1976 & ’77. Washington Huskies Wrestling
The Washington Huskies are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Washington, located in Seattle. The school competes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Washington students, sports teams, and alumni are called Huskies. The husky was selected as the school mascot by the Associated Students of UW in 1922.
