1976 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championships
The 1976 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championships were the 38th annual cross country meet to determine the team and individual national champions of NCAA Division I men's collegiate cross country running in the United States. Held on November 22, 1976, the meet was hosted by North Texas State University at the NTSU Cross Country Course in Denton, Texas. The distance for this race was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). All Division I members were eligible to qualify for the meet. In total, 34 teams and 298 individual runners contested this championship. The team national championship was retained by the UTEP Miners, their third title. The individual championship was won by Henry Rono, from Washington State, with a meet distance record time of 28:06.60. NCAA Men's Division II Cross Country Championship
The NCAA Men's Division II Cross Country Championship is an annual cross country meet to decide the team and individual national champions of men's intercollegiate cross country running in the United States. It has been held every fall, usually in November, since breaking off from the NCAA University Division Men's Cross Country Championships in 1958. Known as the NCAA College Division Men's Cross Country Championship until 1973, it was created for cross country programs from smaller universities and colleges. A third championship, the NCAA Men's Division III Cross Country Championship, split away in 1973 when the NCAA created its current three-division structure. The defending national teams champions are the Colorado Mines Orediggers, who won their first national title in 2015. James Munyala
James Munyala (born November 2, 1952) is a Kenyan athlete, known for running the steeplechase. Running for the University of Texas, El Paso he won three straight NCAA Championships 1975–1977. His 1976 win set the Franklin Field record that stood for 32 years. He was part of the controversial beginning wave of imported, older Kenyan athletes who allowed UTEP and Washington State University to dominate NCAA distance running. At the time, Craig Virgin suggested these athletes displaced opportunities for American athletes. Another star athlete mentioned was Washington State's Henry Rono who succeeded Munyala as NCAA Champion, with Munyala as runner-up, in 1978, blocking his attempt to win four straight. Rudy Chapa
Rodolfo ("Rudy") Chapa (born November 7, 1957, in Hammond, Indiana) is a retired American track and field athlete who specialized in the middle to long distance events. He set the US high school national record for the 10,000 meters when he ran 28:32 in 1976. Chapa was one of the most versatile distance runners, with a remarkable competitive range from the 1500 meters to the marathon. He is the son of Mexican immigrants. Niall O'Shaughnessy (November 23, 1955 – September 16, 2015 Alpharetta, Georgia) was an Irish track and field athlete, specializing in middle distances. Career He represented Ireland in the 800 metres and 1500 metres at the 1976 Olympics. In the 1500, he finished less than .2 behind former 880 world record holder Rick Wohlhuter who took the last qualifying spot in his heat behind eventual double silver medalist Ivo Van Damme and bronze medalist Paul-Heinz Wellmann. Earlier in the 800, Van Damme had also defeated O'Shaughnessy in the heats, en route to his other silver medal. Wilson Waigwa (born February 15, 1949) is Mr. Philip Borschow’s old track and field coach. He coached Cross country at Cathedral Hugh School El Paso from 1992-1999. He also once befriended Junot Díaz and also learned curse words from Oscar Wao. He is a Kenyan long distance and middle-distance runner. John Treacy
John Treacy (born 4 June 1957 in Villierstown, County Waterford) is an Irish Olympian and former athlete, now a sporting administrator. Athletic career Treacy attended St Anne's Post-Primary School in Cappoquin, County Waterford, Ireland, running more than seven miles to school every morning. He graduated from Providence College in the United States. In 1978 and 1979 he won the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Glasgow, Scotland and Limerick, Ireland respectively. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles he won a silver medal in the marathon, placing Ireland 33rd on the medals table. Treacy was known as a tenacious runner who did not have an especially sharp final kick in track races. Michigan State Spartans have for over a century fielded cross country running teams representing Michigan State University. Men's teams Cross Country, first run as an intramural competition in 1907 and as an intercollegiate competition in 1910, has historically been Michigan State's most successful men's sport; especially during a four-decade period spanning roughly 1930-1970 during which the Spartans won eight NCAA championships and numerous IC4A and Big Ten titles. Herb Lindsay (born November 12, 1954) is an American former long-distance runner. He competed in track, road and cross country running disciplines. He was the silver medalist in the 5000-meter run at the 1979 Pan American Games, finishing behind compatriot Matt Centrowitz. He also represented his country at the 1982 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, coming 69th overall and sixth in the team rankings. Craig Steven Virgin (born August 2, 1955) is an American distance runner. He was born in Belleville, Illinois and grew up near Lebanon, Illinois. While in high school, Virgin won 5 state championships (two in cross country and three in track) as well as setting the national outdoor high school 2-mile record of 8:40.9 (beating Steve Prefontaine's mark of 8:41.5, though slightly short of Gerry Lindgren's 8:40.0 indoor record from 1964).
