Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. It was originally run over but was shortened to in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. This reduced the distance by , and Rain Lover's 1968 race record of 3:19.1 was accordingly adjusted to 3:17.9. The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston Rule with a time of 3:16.3. Battle Heights
Battle Heights was a notable New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. A son of Battle-Waggon from the mare Wuthering Heights, he was foaled in 1967 and was trained throughout his career by Tim Douglas. Battle Heights started in 115 races and raced until he was 10 years old when he was forced into retirement after breaking down in the 1977 VRC LKS Mackinnon Stakes. During his career, he raced and won in every season from the age of three until ten and was successful over distances ranging from 1,100m to 3,200m. He was also second to Rose Mellay in the 1974 Auckland Cup over 3200m. Battle Heights was later ridden by C.Walsh in the Cullinan spelling paddock in the Western Districts of Queensland. Caryl described the horse as still having that zest for racing, and misbehaved quite often. On one occasion Battle Heights was heading for a fence, and Caryl had to take quick action of jumping off before colliding with a fence. Battle Heights died in 1999 aged 32. Pedigree See also ... Victoria Racing Club
The Victoria Racing Club was founded in 1864. It was formed following the disbanding of the Victoria Turf Club and the Victoria Jockey Club. A legacy passed from the Victoria Turf Club was the annual "race that stops a nation", the Melbourne Cup, which was first contested in 1861. From its foundation in 1864 until 2001, the Victoria Racing Club was the responsible authority for the conduct of thoroughbred racing in the State of Victoria, Australia. Since 2001, this role has been managed by Racing Victoria Limited. The VRC is managed by an unpaid committee, elected by club members. In 1871, the Victorian Government appointed the VRC as trustees of a site of 352 acres (1.4 km2) of Crown Land, next to the Maribyrnong River, which became known as Flemington Racecourse. Malcolm Johnston (jockey)
Malcolm Johnston (born 19 October 1956) is a retired Australian jockey. Johnston was raised in the rural town of Forbes, New South Wales. He went to Sydney, as an apprentice jockey underneath trainer Theo Green, riding his first winner in Sydney at Rosehill Racecourse, Rosehill in 1973. Johnston would go on to win three Sydney apprentice premierships, as well as winning the overall jockeys title when still an apprentice, riding 107.5 winners in the 1975–76 season. He won a further two jockeys premierships in 1977–78, and 1986–87. Johnston is most renowned for his association with the horse Kingston Town which he rode in 25 of the horse's 30 victories. Johnston retired in 1993, having ridden over 2,000 winners, including 37 at Group One level. Roy Higgins (jockey)
Roy Henry Higgins MBE (5 June 19388 March 2014) was an Australian jockey who rode from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. His talent in the saddle was to later earn him the nickname "The Professor". Early life Higgins was born in Koondrook, Victoria and grew up in the southern New South Wales town of Deniliquin where, in 1953, he was apprenticed to local horse trainer Jim Watters. Career Despite a constant battle with his weight, Higgins won almost every major race on the Australian calendar. He rode a total of 2312 winners during his career and won the Melbourne Jockeys' Premiership a record-equalling 11 times. His first premiership win was in the 1964/65 racing season. Higgins won the Melbourne Cup twice, on Light Fingers in 1965 and Red Handed in 1967, both for trainer Bart Cummings, one Caulfield Cup, two W. S. Midge Didham
Ernest John "Midge" Didham (born 1945 in Mosgiel, New Zealand) is a retired jockey and horse trainer. Midge's father, Arthur, was a top-class jockey and trained at Wingatui. Midge was the leading New Zealand jockey in the 1969–70 season with 99 wins. He shifted to Australia after he rode Igloo, trained by his father, to finish second to Silver Knight in the 1971 Melbourne Cup. John Letts (jockey)
John Richard "Johnny" Letts (born 1943 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former Australian jockey whose career spanned almost 30 years, retiring from race riding in 1988. Letts began riding as an apprentice in 1959, aged 16 years old and eventually rode over 2,300 winners. He was immortalized by winning the Melbourne Cup twice on Piping Lane in 1972 and Beldale Ball in 1980. Apart from his Melbourne Cup successes he rode a host of big race winners including three SAJC Adelaide Cups on Rain Lover (1968), Grand Scale (1976) and Amarant (1983). John Hawkes (horseman)
John Hawkes is an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse trainer who is notable for heading: * the national trainers' premiership ten times * the Sydney premiership nine times (1993/94, 94/95, 95/96, 97/98, 98/99, 99/2000, 2003/04, 05/06, 06/07) * leading Group One trainer six times * leading stakes-winning trainer nine times.
