League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. Mick Lawlor (footballer)
Mick Lawlor (born 12 April 1949 in Dublin) is an Irish former footballer who played as a forward. Son of Kit Lawlor he joined Shamrock Rovers in 1966 and made a scoring debut on 20 April 1966. He scored his first goal for the Hoops the following season in a Dublin City Cup semi final win over Waterford United. He twice played in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup for Rovers against Randers FC and FC Schalke 04. He scored 41 League and 8 FAI Cup goals in the green and white and earned one League of Ireland XI cap. After all the success at Milltown Mick signed for Shelbourne in January 1974. He later signed for Dundalk F.C. in 1976 and was named Player of the Month in March 1977. He had more success scoring against Celtic at Parkhead in the 1979–80 European Cup. Terry Flanagan (footballer)
Terry Flanagan (born 1950) was an Irish soccer player who played for Bohemians, Dundalk and Thurles Town during the 1970s. Flanagan was top scorer in the 1973-74 League of Ireland season with 18 league goals from 26 games. His total for that season was 29 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. He made three appearances for Bohemians in European competition, scoring once at Ibrox in the European Cup. In November 1975 he was transfer listed. He then signed for Dundalk F.C. and scored on his debut. In his three seasons at Oriel Park he scored a total of 33 goals including the winner in a 1977-78 European Cup Winners' Cup clash with Hajduk Split. Damien Byrne
Damien Byrne (born 6 April 1954 in Dublin) is an Irish former professional football player. In a career spanning 20 seasons, Byrne won player of the year awards in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the only man to do so. He started his career as a forward but midway through his career switched to centre back. His son Phil Byrne currently plays for Carrick Rangers in the IFA Premiership. Career Byrne played schoolboy football for Home Farm and made his League of Ireland debut on 12 October 1973 for that club against St Patrick's Athletic. He stayed only one season with Home Farm and in the summer of 1974 he signed for Dundalk, however by the end of November he had moved on to their County Louth rivals Drogheda United. Paul Edgar Philippe Martin (born August 28, 1938), also known as Paul Martin Jr., is a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 21st prime minister of Canada and the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2003 to 2006. The son of former secretary of state for external affairs Paul Martin Sr., Martin was a lawyer from Ontario before he became president and the chief executive officer of Canada Steamship Lines in 1973. He held that position until his election as a member of Parliament for the Montreal riding of LaSalle—Émard in 1988. Frank Devlin
Joseph Francis Devlin (19 January 1900 – 27 October 1988) was an Irish male badminton player. Badminton career Devlin is the second most successful player ever in the All England Open Badminton Championships with 18 titles between 1925 and 1931, including three triple championships in 1926, 1927 and 1929. He also won four Irish Championships. Despite being Irish he was part of the English team that toured Canada in 1925 to promote the sport on behalf of the Canadian Badminton Association which had recently been formed in 1921. He was living in Beckenham, Kent and worked as a Salesman. He was also part of a second English touring team that visited Canada during 1930. Bobby Tambling
Robert Victor Tambling (born 18 September 1941) is an English former professional association football, footballer, who played as a Forward (association football), forward, most notably for Chelsea F.C., Chelsea, Crystal Palace F.C., Crystal Palace and England national football team, England. He was Chelsea's all-time top scorer for 47 years, with 202 goals in all competitions until Frank Lampard surpassed this total on 11 May 2013. Tambling remains Chelsea's all-time top scorer in league competition with 164 goals. Mick Leech
Mick Leech (born 6 August 1948 in Dublin) was an Irish professional football player who made his name with Shamrock Rovers in the 1960s. He was signed by Paddy Ambrose and Liam Tuohy for Rovers in September 1966 from junior side Ormeau. He spent 6 weeks in the reserves before he made his first team debut against Dundalk at Milltown on New Year's Day 1967. Rovers drew 1–1 and Mick was substituted by Billy Dixon in the second half. Leech scored his first goal for the Hoops on 4 January 1967. He played his first FAI Cup tie for Rovers in the semi-final against Dundalk and scored Rovers' goal as they drew 1–1. The Hoops made no mistake in the replay as Mick scored twice in a 3–0 win. He went to score the second equaliser in the final against St Pat's and Mick Leech had his first Cup medal while still a teenager.
