1975 Japan Open Tennis Championships
The 1975 Japan Open Tennis Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament played on hard courts. The men's events were part of the 1975 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix and took place at the Denen Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan. The tournament was held from 2 November through 8 November 1975. Raúl Ramírez and Kazuko Sawamatsu won the singles titles. Finals Men's singles Raúl Ramírez defeated Manuel Orantes 6–4, 7–5, 6–3 * It was Ramirez' 4th singles title of the year and the 7th of his career. Women's singles Kazuko Sawamatsu defeated Ann Kiyomura 6–2, 3–6, 6–1 * It was Sawamatsu's 1st singles title of the year and the 2nd and last of his career. Grand Prix Tennis Circuit
The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. But these successes led to financial difficulties when players were paid too much and falling attendances resulted in reduced takings. In the early 1960s, the professional tour began to fall apart. The 1975 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit administered by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) which served as a forerunner to the current Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. The circuit consisted of the four modern Grand Slam tournaments and open tournaments recognised by the ILTF. The Commercial Union Assurance Masters, Davis Cup Final and Nations Cup are included in this calendar but did not count towards the Grand Prix. Japan Open (tennis)
The Japan Open (currently sponsored by Rakuten) is a men's tennis tournament held in Ariake Tennis Forest Park with its center court Ariake Coliseum, located in Koto, Tokyo, Japan. It was originally founded in 1915 as the Japan International Championships. In 2018, the venue switched to the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza as the Ariake Coliseum is being renovated for the tennis events at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The championship includes men's singles and doubles competitions. From 1979 until 2008 the Japan Open was a joint tournament for both men and women. This is no longer the case in the aftermath of the Ariake Coliseum hosting another women's professional tournament, the Pan Pacific Open. On the women's side, the Japan Open was held until 2008 on the WTA Tour, and then it was downgraded to a $100,000+H ITF Women's Circuit event. In 2010, the women's event was discontinued. Kiyomi Nomura
('' Citrus unshiu'' × '' sinensis'') is a Japanese citrus fruit that is a hybrid of a ''Miyagawa Wase'' mikan and an orange. The new breed was the first tangor created in Japan in 1949. It was named Kiyomi after the temple and the lagoon near its experiment station in Shizuoka city and registered as "Tangor Nōrin No.1" in 1979. Kiyomi are sweet. Sugar content is normally 11–12° Bx and reaches even 13 °Bx if conditions are met. Citric acid content is around 1%. It has no seeds. The time of ripening is mid to late March. The flavor is similar to that of a ''mikan'', while the aroma is similar to that of an orange. Kiyomi is a monogerm, so it is often used as a parent citrus to create new hybrids such as dekopon. Kayoko Fukuoka
is a Japanese former professional tennis player. Fukuoka, a two-time French Open quarter-finalist in doubles, featured in 16 Federation Cup ties for Japan as a doubles specialist and won a total of 12 matches. At the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran, Fukuoka partnered with Toshiko Sade to win the women's doubles event. She was also a silver medalist at the 1973 University Games. Ann Kiyomura-Hayashi (born August 22, 1955) is a retired American professional tennis player. She is from San Mateo, California. Kiyomura played on the WTA Tour from 1973 to 1984. She played in 11 US Opens, reaching the fourth round in 1978. In 1973, she won the Wimbledon junior singles title, beating Martina Navratilova. In 1975, she won the Wimbledon women's doubles title, playing with Kazuko Sawamatsu. She reached the final of the Australian Open women's doubles in 1980. Kiyomura played in 1981 for the short-lived Oakland Breakers of World Team Tennis (WTT). Manuel Orantes Corral (; born 6 February 1949) is a former tennis player from Spain who was active in the 1970s and 1980s. He won the US Open men's singles title in 1975, beating defending champion Jimmy Connors in the final. Orantes reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 2.
