1974–75 York City F.C. Season
The 1974–75 season was the 53rd season of competitive association football and 46th season in the Football League played by York City Football Club, a professional football club based in York, North Yorkshire, England. They finished in fifteenth position in the 22-team 1974–75 Football League Second Division. They entered the 1974–75 FA Cup in the third round and lost to Arsenal, and entered the 1974–75 League Cup in the first round and lost to Huddersfield Town. 22 players made at least one appearance in nationally organised first-team competition, and there were 11 different goalscorers. Goalkeeper Graeme Crawford, defender Chris Topping and midfielder Ian Holmes played in all 45 first-team matches over the season. Tom Johnston (footballer)
Thomas Deans Johnston (30 December 1918 – 27 November 1994) was a Scottish professional footballer and manager. Johnston grew up in Kelso and began his senior career with Edinburgh side St Bernard's before moving south to join Peterborough United in late 1938. He guested for Bourne Town and Northampton Town during the Second World War and signed for Nottingham Forest upon its conclusion. He crossed the Trent to join Notts County in 1947 and played alongside Tommy Lawton. Originally an inside forward, Johnston latterly developed into a goal-scoring outside left. Following his playing retirement he earned FA coaching qualifications and, in 1956, a coaching position with Birmingham City. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. Manor Ground (Oxford)
The Manor Ground was a football stadium in Oxford, England, the home of Oxford United (previously known as Headington United) between 1925 and 2001. It hosted United's record crowd of 22,750 against Preston North End in an FA Cup 6th Round match on 29 February 1964. The main seating stand was the Beech Road stand (on the west), the 'home' terracing was the London Road stand (south), the 'away' terracing was Cuckoo Lane (north) and on the fourth side was the Osler Road stand (east). In 1966, with the demolition of Sandfield College, a new entrance to the ground was created onto London Road. With the advent of the 1990s and the Taylor Report, the Manor Ground's terracing was rapidly becoming antiquated, and it gained a reputation amongst fans as one of the more dilapidated stadiums in English professional football. Barry Lyons (footballer)
Barry Lyons (born 14 March 1945) is an English former professional footballer and manager. Playing career Born in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, Lyons started his career with Rotherham United in 1963, making his debut in September 1963. He moved to Nottingham Forest for £45,000 in November 1966. During his time at Forest, he came close to earning a cap for the England U23 team. He was a part of the team which was runner-up in the First Division in the 1966–67 season. Lyons joined York City for £12,000 in September 1973, where showed some class performances as York won promotion. He scored York's first goal in the higher division, which came against Aston Villa.
