1974 Wisconsin Gubernatorial Election
The 1974 Wisconsin gubernatorial election was held on November 5, 1974. Democrat Patrick Lucey won the election with 53% of the vote, winning his second term as Governor of Wisconsin and defeating Republican William Dyke. As of 2023, this is the last time a Democratic gubernatorial candidate won Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties. These three counties, collectively known as WOW, have traditionally been among the most Republican areas in the state. It is also the last time a Democratic gubernatorial candidate carried Calumet and Marinette counties. This is also the most recent Wisconsin gubernatorial election in which both major party candidates are now deceased. Patrick Lucey
Patrick Joseph Lucey (March 21, 1918 – May 10, 2014) was an American politician. A member of the United States Democratic Party, Democratic Party, he served as the List of governors of Wisconsin, 38th Governor of Wisconsin from 1971 to 1977. He was also independent presidential candidate John B. Anderson's running mate in the 1980 United States presidential election, 1980 presidential election. Born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Lucey served in state and local government offices after graduating from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Wisconsin. He served in the Quartermaster Corps (United States Army), Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army during World War II. The American Party of the United States is a conservative political party in the United States. The party adheres to its Permanent Principles, which were established in 1969. The party began as part of the American Independent Party, supporters of George Wallace's 1968 campaign for the presidency, and was the formal name of the party on the ballot in Tennessee. Calumet County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 52,442. The county seat is Chilton.
