The 1974 United States Senate election in Alaska took place on November 5, 1974. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Mike Gravel was re-elected to a second term in office, defeating Republican State Senator Clyde "C.R." Lewis. Mike Gravel
Maurice Robert "Mike" Gravel ( ; May 13, 1930 – June 26, 2021) was an American politician and writer who served as a United States Senator from Alaska from 1969 to 1981 as a member of the Democratic Party, and who later in life twice ran for the presidential nomination of that party. Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, by French-Canadian immigrant parents, Gravel moved to Alaska in the late 1950s, becoming a real estate developer and entering politics. He served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1963 to 1967, and also became Speaker of the Alaska House. Gravel was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1968. As a senator, Gravel became nationally known for his forceful, but unsuccessful, attempts to end the draft during the War in Vietnam, and for putting the ''Pentagon Papers'' into the public record in 1971. Dick Greuel
Richard J. Greuel (April 18, 1928 – December 3, 2013) was an American radio announcer, real estate businessman, and Democratic politician in the U.S. territory and state of Alaska. Greuel served as speaker of the Alaska Territorial House of Representatives during the last territorial legislature, and would also serve in the Alaska House of Representatives following statehood. Biography Richard Greuel was born in New Holstein, Wisconsin on April 18, 1928. Greuel came to Fairbanks, Alaska through his service in the U.S. Army and stayed there after leaving the Army. He spent a number of years working for Fairbanks radio station KFAR as an announcer and program director. He would later go on to work in real estate. Greuel was Presbyterian. Walter Eugene Guess (December 30, 1932 – March 13, 1975) was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Tutwiler, Mississippi, Guess graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1955, Guess graduated from the College of William & Mary. He served in the United States Army as an artillery officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In 1959, Guess received his law degree from University of Virginia School of Law. He worked as an attorney for the United States Department of the Interior and settled in Anchorage, Alaska. He then practiced law in Anchorage. From 1965 to 1973, Guess served in the Alaska House of Representatives and was a Democrat. He served as speaker of the house in 1971. Terrence B. "Terry" Miller (November 10, 1942 – April 13, 1989) was an American businessman and politician. Miller served as the fourth lieutenant governor of Alaska from 1978 to 1982. His political career, which began while he was in his early 20s, lasted over two decades and was cut short by his death from lung cancer at age 46. Early life Terry Miller was born in San Francisco, California on November 10, 1942, the second of four children and second of three sons of Con B. and Nellie Miller. North Pole is a small city in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, United States. Incorporated in 1953, it is part of the Fairbanks metropolitan statistical area. The 1974 United States Senate elections were held in the wake of the Watergate scandal, Richard M. Nixon's resignation from the presidency, and Gerald Ford's subsequent pardon of Nixon. Economic issues, specifically inflation and stagnation, were also a factor that contributed to Republican losses.
