1974 TCU Horned Frogs Football Team
The 1974 TCU Horned Frogs football team represented Texas Christian University (TCU) in the 1974 NCAA Division I football season. The Horned Frogs finished the season 1–10 overall and 0–7 in the Southwest Conference. The team was coached by Jim Shofner, in his first year as head coach. The Frogs played their home games in Amon G. Carter Stadium, which is located on campus in Fort Worth, Texas. The season turned tragic on October 26 when running back Kent Waldrep was paralyzed from the chest down when he was tackled in the second quarter of the Horned Frogs' game vs. Alabama at Birmingham. Jim Shofner
James Bernard Shofner (December 18, 1935 – July 17, 2021) was an American football player and coach at both the collegiate and professional levels. He was twice a head coach: first at Texas Christian University (TCU) from 1974 to 1976, then in an interim capacity with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) in 1990. Early life and playing career Shofner was a four-sport star at North Side High School in Fort Worth, Texas, serving as captain of three squads. He played college football on both sides of the ball at Texas Christian, leading the Southwest Conference in rushing in 1957 with 682 yards, while scoring six touchdowns. He was a first round draft selection of the Cleveland Browns the following year, and after seeing little action as a rookie, became a starting cornerback in 1959. The 1974 Texas Longhorns football team represented the University of Texas at Austin in the 1974 NCAA Division I football season. The Longhorns finished the regular season with an 8–3 record and lost to Auburn in the 1974 Gator Bowl. This was the first season where Texas, alongside Ohio State, Army, and Notre Dame, played an 11-game regular season schedule. The TCU–Texas Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the TCU Horned Frogs football team of Texas Christian University (TCU), and the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team of Texas Tech University. The winner of the annual game is presented with the Saddle Trophy, a traveling icon which bears plaques marking the score of each meeting between the rival schools. In their fifth and final season under head coach Jim Carlen, the Red Raiders compiled a 6–4–2 record (3–4 against conference opponents), finished in sixth place in the SWC, and outscored opponents by a combined total of 193 to 158. Legion Field is an outdoor stadium in the southeastern United States in Birmingham, Alabama, primarily designed to be used as a venue for American football, but occasionally used for other large outdoor events.
