The 1974 FIBA World Championship was the 7th FIBA World Championship, the international basketball world championship for men's teams. It was hosted by Puerto Rico from July 3 to 14, 1974. The tournament was won by the Soviet Union. Rafael Hernández Colón
Rafael Hernández Colón (October 24, 1936 – May 2, 2019) was a Puerto Rican politician who served as the governor of Puerto Rico from 1973 to 1977 and 1985 to 1993 for a total of three terms. An experienced politician, Hernández held the record for having been the youngest Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to date, having won his first term at the age of 36. Hernández was also the person to have run for governor the most times, a total of five. During his terms as governor, Hernández Colón's administrations were known for trying to invigorate the Puerto Rican economy as well as for defending the political status quo of the island. He is also the second longest-serving Puerto Rico Governor with 12 years of service due to his three terms. Vinko Jelovac
Vinko Jelovac (alternate spelling: Vinto Jelovac) (born 18 November 1948 in Pazin, SR Croatia, Yugoslavia) is a former Slovenian-Croatian professional basketball player and coach. At a height of 2.08 m (6'10") tall, and a weight of 95 kg (210 lbs.), he played at the center position. Jelovac was named Slovenian Sportsman of the Year, in 1973 and 1974. He was inducted into the Slovenian Athletes Hall of Fame, in 2012. Club career During his club career, Jelovac was a long-time player of KK Olimpija. He was a member of the FIBA European Selection, in 1973 and 1974. He won the Yugoslav League championship in 1970. Alexander Belov
Alexander Alexandrovich Belov, commonly known as Sasha Belov (November 9, 1951 – October 3, 1978), was a Soviet basketball player. During his playing career, he played at the center position. Belov is most remembered for scoring the game-winning basket of the gold medal game of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games, which gave the gold medal to the senior Soviet national team. Belov was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991. He was enshrined into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007. Kamil Brabenec (born 4 February 1951) is a retired Czech professional basketball player and coach. At 6'4" (1.93 m) tall, he was a small forward. He was voted to the Czechoslovakian 20th Century Team. Playing career Club career During his club career, Brabenec was a FIBA European Selection, in 1977 and 1978. He won 6 Czechoslovakian League championships, in the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1986, 1987, and 1988. He was also the league's second all-time scorer, with 10,726 points scored. National team career Brabenec helped to lead the senior Czechoslovakia national team to a EuroBasket silver medal, at the 1985 EuroBasket, as well as to two EuroBasket bronze medals, in 1977, and 1981. Francis C. Arnaiz (born June 4, 1951) is a Filipino former basketball player. He is best known as a PBA player, playing for Toyota and Ginebra San Miguel from 1975-1986. Early basketball years Arnaiz had a love for sports and was shooting stuffed toys into a basket in early childhood. While studying at La Salle-Bacolod in elementary school, he competed in football and basketball. Football provided the speed and exceptional footwork, skills which would later develop him into an outstanding basketball player. Manuel "Manolo" Raga Navarro (born March 14, 1944) is a Mexican former professional basketball player. During his playing career, he was nicknamed, "The Flying Mexican", due to his nationality and his one of a kind 43 inch standing (no step) vertical leap. In 2008, he was named one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors. In 2016, he became a FIBA Hall of Fame player. Club career Raga played professionally for Varese in the Italian League, from 1968 to 1974, and with them, he won three EuroLeague championships. Edward Sebastian Palubinskas (born 17 September 1950) is an Australian former professional basketball player and coach. Playing career High school Palubinskas attended Narrabundah High Schoo in Canberra, where he practiced different sports (swimming, track and field, football, gymnastics). He started playing basketball at age 14. In Canberra, he played for a team of Lithuanian immigrants. After moving to Melbourne, Palubinskas played for the St. Kilda Saints, winning the Victorian Championship in 1970. College Coach Lindsay Gaze, who back then considered Palubinskas as "the best offensive player in the history of Australia", put him in contact with Dale Brown, who later became his coach at LSU. Wayne Donald Brabender Cole (born October 16, 1945) is an American-born Spanish retired professional basketball player and coach. He acquired Spanish citizenship in 1968, relinquishing his U.S. citizenship to qualify for the Spanish national team.
