1973–74 Port Vale F.C. Season
The 1973–74 season was Port Vale's 62nd season of football in the Football League, and their fourth-successive season (tenth overall) in the Third Division. They finished in twentieth spot, though were seven points clear of relegation. Manager Gordon Lee left the club in January and was replaced by club legend Roy Sproson. Overview Third Division The pre-season saw Sammy Morgan sold to Aston Villa for £22,222 (plus top-up fees). Gordon Lee drafted in tall young players David Harris and John Ridley from the youth set-up, as well as versatile Keith Chadwick from Crewe Alexandra. Promotion And Relegation
In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. In a system of promotion and relegation, the best-ranked team(s) in the lower division are ''promoted'' to the higher division for the next season, and the worst-ranked team(s) in the higher division are ''relegated'' to the lower division for the next season. In some leagues, playoffs or qualifying rounds are also used to determine rankings. This process can continue through several levels of divisions, with teams being exchanged between adjacent divisions. Keith Leonard
Keith Andrew Leonard (born 10 November 1950) is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker for Aston Villa. He also played on loan at Port Vale, and previously played non-League football for Kidderminster Harriers, Darlaston, and Highgate United. He won the League Cup with Villa in 1975, and was also promoted out of the Second Division. He later became a coach, and led the Aston Villa youth team players to FA Youth Cup victory in 1980; he later served Birmingham City as caretaker manager in 1986. Playing career Born in Birmingham, Leonard worked as a draughtsman whilst playing non-League football with Highgate United, before he joined Aston Villa in April 1972. Roy Cross (footballer)
Roy Cross (born 4 December 1947) is an English former footballer who played as a central defender. He played 161 games in a nine-year career in the Football League, 182 games in four seasons of play in the Southern League, and finally made 54 appearances in two Alliance Premier League campaigns. He began his career at Walsall, making his debut in the 1966–67 season. However he featured just 13 times in four seasons before he moved on to Port Vale in July 1970. He was an ever-present in the 1971–72 season and made 134 consecutive appearances from his debut until he twisted his knee in March 1973. Another knee injury seven months later then caused him to be sidelined for 17 months. He took a free transfer to Nuneaton Borough at the end of the 1974–75 season. Arfon Griffiths
Arfon Trevor Griffiths MBE (born 23 August 1941) is a Welsh former football player and manager. During his playing career which lasted from 1959 to 1979, Griffiths played at both professional and international levels, before becoming a football manager. Career Born in Wrexham, Griffiths was originally spotted in local junior football by former Wrexham player Frank Blew, who then alerted the club's manager Cliff Lloyd. He initially signed Griffiths on amateur forms in May 1957, as the youngster turned down offers of trials from both Liverpool and Sheffield Wednesday. This started a 22-year-long association between with Wrexham as both player and manager. Colin Tartt
Colin Tartt (born 23 November 1950) is an English former footballer. A midfielder, he made 478 league appearances in a 13-year career in the Football League. A qualified teacher, he began his career with Port Vale in 1972. He spent five years at the club, before being sold on to Chesterfield for £15,000 in March 1977. He helped the club to lift the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1981, before he returned to Port Vale for a £15,000 fee in November of that year. He spent four years with the "Valiants", helping the club to achieve promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1982–83. He later returned to teaching and played non-league football for Shepshed Charterhouse and Matlock Town. Wrexham ( ; cy, Wrecsam; ) is a city and the administrative centre of Wrexham County Borough in Wales. Tommy McLaren
Thomas McLaren (1 June 1949 – 23 July 1978) was a Scottish footballer who played as a midfielder. He moved from Berwick Rangers to Port Vale in November 1967. He spent ten years at Vale Park, racking up 369 league and cup appearances. He helped the club to achieve promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1969–70, and also picked up the club's Player of the Year award in 1970–71. He also played on loan for the Portland Timbers in summer 1975, helping the club to the North American Soccer League championship final. Given a free transfer to Telford United in May 1977, he went on to commit suicide in July 1978, having never come to terms with leaving Port Vale. He was 29 years old. Crewe Alexandra F
Crewe () is a railway town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. Keith Michael Chadwick (born 10 March 1953) is an English former Association football, footballer who played as a midfielder. After impressing at non-league Nantwich Town F.C., Nantwich Town, he joined Football League Third Division, Third Division side Port Vale F.C., Port Vale via Crewe Alexandra F.C., Crewe Alexandra in August 1972. In five years he played 46 games in league and cup, scoring seven goals, before he was forced to retire due to injury. He later coached at Port Vale, H. & R. John Ridley (footballer, Born 1952)
John Ridley (27 April 1952 – 3 May 2020) was an English footballer. A versatile player able to play as a defender or midfielder, he had a twelve-year professional career in the English Football League, playing for Port Vale and Chesterfield, as well as Leicester City. He also played for non-League Stafford Rangers and for American side Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He was voted Port Vale F.C. Player of the Year in 1975–76, won the Anglo-Scottish Cup with Chesterfield in 1981, and helped Port Vale to win promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1982–83.
