1973–74 FC Basel Season
The 1973–74 season was Fussball Club Basel 1893's 80th season in their existence. It was their 28th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after their promotion the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. Overview Pre-season Helmut Benthaus was first team manager. This was his ninth season as manager. To the beginning of the season Urs Siegenthaler moved on to play for Xamax and Rolf Riner left to play for Servette. In the other direction Rudolf Wampfler joined from Sion, Arthur von Wartburg joined from Concordia Basel and Roland Paolucci returned from his loan to Winterthur. But the most notorious transfer was that of Teófilo Cubillas from Alianza Lima. The Basler entrepreneur and transport company owner Ruedi Reisdorfer paid the transfer fee of £97,000. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. Rolf Riner
Rolf Riner (24 April 1951 – 11 April 1988) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel, Servette and CS Chênois during the 1970s and early 1950s. He played mainly in the position of striker, but also as a midfielder. Football career Riner played his youth football for FC Basel and advanced to their first team during the 1969/70 season. During his first season he played only one match and this was the Cup of the Alps game against Sampdoria. The match was played on 9 June 1970 in the St. Jakob Stadium and Riner scored the winning goal as Basel won 2–1. After a few further test games, Riner played his domestic league debut for the club in their 1970–71 season. It was the home game on 12 September 1970 as Basel won 3–0 against Fribourg. Statistics of Swiss Super League in the 1972–73 season. Overview 14 teams contested in the 1972–73 Nationalliga A. These were the top 12 teams from the previous 1971–72 season and the two newly promoted teams Chiasso and Fribourg. The championship was played in a double round robin. The champions would qualify for the 1973–74 European Cup, the second and third placed teams were to qualify for 1973–74 UEFA Cup and the last two teams in the table at the end of the season were to be relegated. Basel won the championship four points ahead of Grasshopper Club and six ahead of the Sion. Basel won 17 of their 26 league games, drew five and lost four. The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) is an international organization dedicated to collecting statistics about association football. The foundation aims to build an exhaustive archive of football-related information from around the world. ''Knattspyrnufélagið Fram'' (''Fram Football Club'') is an Icelandic sports club, best known for its football and handball teams. It was founded on 1 May 1908 in Reykjavík. Club Alianza Lima, popularly known as Alianza Lima or simply Alianza, is a Peruvian professional sports club based in La Victoria District of Lima, Peru. Teófilo Juan Cubillas Arizaga (; born 8 March 1949) is a Peruvian former footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He was selected as Peru's greatest ever player in an IFFHS poll, in which he was also included in the world's Top 50. He was renowned for his technique, shooting ability and free kick ability. Nicknamed ''El Nene'' ''(The Kid)'', he was part of the Peru national team that won the 1975 Copa América. He helped Peru reach the quarter finals at the 1970 FIFA World Cup and again at the 1978 World Cup and was elected the South American Footballer of the Year in 1972. FC Winterthur is a Swiss football club based in Winterthur, Canton of Zürich. They play in the Swiss Super League, the first tier of Swiss football, and appeared regularly in the Nationalliga A during the 20th century. Their home is the Stadion Schützenwiese. Roland Paolucci
Roland Paolucci (born 22 September 1947) is a retired Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel during the 1960s and early 1970s. During this time he was loaned out for one season to Winterthur and he ended his playing career playing for Nordstern Basel. He played mainly in the position as defender but also as defensive midfielder. He was player-manager for a few regional clubs in the late 1970s, was youth trainer and later became President of SV Muttenz. In 2006 he was appointed into the regional section of the Swiss Football Association and became president of the FVNWS (North West section) for 13 years. Football career Paolucci started his youth football by FC Basel in 1962. In 1965 he moved up to their first team.
