The 1973 World Judo Championships were the 8th edition of the Men's World Judo Championships, and were held in Lausanne, Switzerland from June 22–24, 1973. World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. The last edition of the championships took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2022. History The first edition of the world championships took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. There were no weight classes at the time and Japanese judoka Shokichi Natsui became the first world champion in history, defeating fellow countryman Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu in the final. Klaus Glahn
Klaus Glahn (born 23 March 1942) is a retired West German judoka who competed at the 1964 and 1972 Olympics. In 1964 he won a bronze medal in the openweight class while representing the United Team of Germany. Eight years later he won a silver medal for West Germany in the heavyweight category. Between 1967 and 1973 Glahn won five medals at World Championships in the heavyweight and open divisions. He also won three European heavyweight titles, in 1963, 1968 and 1970. From 1985 to 1988 Glahn was president of the German Judo Federation. He also worked as a manager at Volkswagen Group. In the 2000s Glahn was active in politics. Haruki Uemura
is a judoka from Japan, who won the gold medal in the Open class at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. In the final of the Olympic tournament in Canada he defeated Great Britain's Keith Remfry. Kazuhiro Ninomiya
is a retired judoka who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. Biography After graduating from Tenri University, Ninomiya entered the Shoki Juku under the instruction of Isao Okano. He joined the Fukuoka Prefecture police force in April 1972, and placed third in the All-Japan Judo Championships that year. He won a gold medal in the heavyweight division of the Asian Judo Championships in 1970 and the open weight division of the 1973 World Judo Championships held in Lausanne, Switzerland by defeating future Olympic gold medalist Haruki Uemura. He won another gold medal at the 1975 World Championships and won the All-Japan Judo Championships for the first time in 1976 to qualify for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Keith Remfry (17 November 1947 – 16 September 2015) was a judoka from the United Kingdom, who won the silver medal in the Open class at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He lost to Japan's Haruki Uemura is a judoka from Japan, who won the gold medal in the Open class at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Chonosuke Takagi
was a Japanese judoka. Takagi is from Shirahama, Chiba and began judo when he was in junior high school. When he was a member of judo club at , the senior of club is Masatoshi Shinomaki. Takagi began working for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department after graduation from Nihon University in 1971. He participated in the World Championship twice and won a gold medal in 1973 and a bronze medal in 1975. As of 2011, Takagi coached judo at his alma mater, Nihon University. Among his students are Jun Konno, Michiaki Kamochi, Makoto Takimoto and others. He died of a heart attack at the age of 68 on 6 December 2016. David Starbrook
David Colin (Colon) Starbrook MBE (born 9 August 1945) is a British retired judoka. Between 1972 and 1976 he won two silver and five bronze medals at the Olympic Games, world and European championships. Starbrook has 4 children: Joanne, Sam, Leon, and Emily. Starbrook took up judo at the late age of 19. He is the author of the book ''Judo, Starbrook style''. He lives in France where he continues to practise and coach judo. His son, Leon, is also a judoka.
