The 1973 Amateur World Series run by FIBA is listed in the history books as "Amateur World Series XXI" or "Baseball World Cup XXI" even though the event numbered "XXII" actually had begun and finished earlier - the 1973 Amateur World Series run by rival group FEMBA. Once the two organizations reconciled later in the decade, the current numbering system was put into place. The 1970 Amateur World Series was held in Cartagena, Colombia from November 18 through December 4, 1970. It was the first Amateur World Series in over 30 years to feature a European team and was the first to include two European teams. While both won a game, the newcomers clearly struggled; within 35 years, both will have made it to the Medal round. Though the FEMBA event started and ended earlier, it went into the history books post-reconciliation as "Amateur World Series XXII" while the FIBA event was known as "Amateur World Series XXI". The FEMBA Series was held in Managua, Nicaragua from November 22 through December 5. Baseball World Cup
The Baseball World Cup was an international tournament where national baseball teams from around the world competed. It was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). Along with the World Baseball Classic, it was one of two active tournaments considered by the IBAF to be a major world championship. The baseball tournament at the Summer Olympic Games was also considered a major world championship while baseball was an Olympic sport. After the 2011 tournament, the Baseball World Cup was discontinued in favor of an expanded World Baseball Classic tournament.
