Eliteserien, known as Fjordkraftligaen due to sponsorship, is the premier Norwegian ice hockey league, organised by the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association. It comprises 10 clubs and works on the premise of promotion and relegation, in which the two teams who placed last must play the top two teams from First Division (the league ranked immediately below) for the rights to play in the next Eliteserie season. History The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association (NIHF) was founded on 16 September 1934. The same season also saw the debut of a national league for ice hockey. It was then known as 1. divisjon (''1st division''), a name it held until 1990, when the elite clubs broke away and formed a new top league, Eliteserien (''The Elite League''). Vålerenga Ishockey (; abbreviated as VIF) is a Norwegian ice hockey team based in Oslo, Norway. Vålerenga has been the dominant force in Norwegian hockey since the 1960s, claiming 26 national championships and 29 regular season titles. Their old home arena, located in central-eastern Oslo, was Jordal Amfi, built for the 1952 Winter Olympics. In 2020, Vålerenga moved in to their new arena at Jordal. Jar IL
Jar Idrettslag is a Norwegian sports club from Bærum, Akershus. It mainly covers the areas Jar, Lysaker and parts of Stabekk. Jar IL was founded on 2 February 1934 as a merger between the boys' clubs Freidig and Rapp. It had sections for bandy, association football, track and field and Nordic skiing (cross-country skiing and ski jumping). Sections were added for team handball in 1940, orienteering in the 1940s and ice hockey in the 1950s. Ice hockey was the main focus from 1954, while all other sports waned. Only handball survived. The home field was Jar idrettsplass, colloquially named Jarbanen, which was opened on 20 August 1937. The ground had originally been given to Bærums SK in 1922 by Harald Løvenskiold. The field was owned by ''Jar Welfare Society'' from 1938 to 1946, Jar IL from 1946 to 1968 and then by Bærum Municipality. Skeid is a Norwegian alliance sports club from Nordre Åsen, Oslo. It has sections for association football (one for elite and one for grassroots football), Nordic skiing and bandy. General history The club was founded as ''IK Skeid'' on 5 December 1925. It was a merger between the two clubs ''Kristiania BK'' (founded 1 January 1915 as a merger of ''Njord'' and ''Oslo FK'') and ''SFK Frem'' (nicknamed ''Frem 14'', founded 9 April 1914 as a merger of ''Bjølsen FK'' and footballers in Thorshaug IF). Skeid now counts 1 January 1915 as its founding date. Grüner Idrettslag is a Norwegian alliance sports club from Grünerløkka, Oslo. It has sections for association football, team handball and ice hockey, formally named ''Grüner Fotball IL '', ''Grüner Håndball IL'' and ''Grüner Ishockey IL''. The club colors are purple. It was founded on 14 October 1952 as a merger of the teams ''Strong'', ''B14'' and ''Spero'', but it counts 1914, founding date of B14, as its own founding date. Eliteserien () is a Norwegian professional league for association football clubs. At the top of the Norwegian football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Norwegian First Division. Seasons run from March to November with each team playing 30 matches (playing each other home and away). Most games are played on Sunday evenings. Eliteserien was founded in 1937 as Norgesserien (), and the first season was the 1937–38 League of Norway, 1937–38 season.
