1972 Virginia Slims Championships
The 1972 Virgin Slims Championships were the first season-ending championships of the Virginia Slims Circuit (a precursor to the WTA Tour), the annual tennis tournament for the best female tennis players in singles on the 1972 Virginia Slims circuit. The singles-only tournament was played on outdoor clay courts and was held from October 9 through October 15, 1972, at the Boca Raton Hotel & Club in Boca Raton, Florida in the United States. Fourth-seeded Chris Evert won the title but could not accept the first place prize money of $25,000 as she was not yet 18 years old and therefore was classified as an amateur. Champion Chris Evert defeated Kerry Melville, 7–5, 6–4. * It was Evert's 4th singles title of the year and the 11th of her career. The Evening Independent
The ''Evening Independent'' was St. Petersburg, Florida's first daily newspaper. The sister evening newspaper of the ''St. Petersburg Times'', it was launched as a weekly newspaper in March 1906 under the ownership of Willis B. Powell. In November 1907, it became a daily paper as the ''St. Petersburg Evening Independent''. The newspaper was known for its "Sunshine Offer", which was first enacted in 1910 by Lew Brown as a way to publicize St. Petersburg as "The Sunshine City". The paper offered copies free following days without sunshine in St. Petersburg. From 1910 until the paper folded in 1986, the ''Evening Independent'' made good on its offer 296 times. The Virginia Slims of Florida is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament played from 1984 to 1995 in various locations in Florida in the United States. It was held at the Frenchman's Creek Beach & Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens in 1984, at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne from 1985 to 1986, at the Polo Club in Boca Raton from 1987 to 1992, and at the Delray Beach Tennis Center in Delray Beach from 1993 to 1995. The tournament was played on outdoor clay courts in 1984 and on outdoor hard courts from 1985 to 1995. Steffi Graf was the most successful player at the tournament, winning the singles competition six times. Kerry Melville Reid (née Melville; born 7 August 1947) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. During her 17-year career, Reid won one Grand Slam singles title and 26 other singles titles and was the runner-up in 40 singles tournaments. Reid was included in the year-end world top-ten rankings for 12 consecutive years (1968–1979). She won at least one tournament annually from 1966 through 1979, except for 1975. 1972 Virginia Slims Circuit
The 1972 ILTF Women's Tennis Circuit was 58th season since the founding of the International Lawn Tennis Association and was the final season to be solely administered by the ILTF. It was composed of the 2nd annual Virginia Slims Circuit with 20 events, a tour of tennis tournaments for female tennis players, sponsored by Virginia Slims cigarettes, but approved by the ILTF and the 2nd annual ILTF Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix circuit with 11 events, and the 58th annual ILTF Circuit with 125 events.
