1972 Titleholders Championship
The 1972 Titleholders Championship was contested from May 26–29 at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. It was the 28th and final edition of the Titleholders Championship, following a six-year hiatus. It was the only edition not played at the Augusta Country Club. This event was won by Sandra Palmer. Pine Needles Lodge And Golf Club
The Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club is a country club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The club's golf course was designed by Donald Ross. The club hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 1996, 2001, 2007, and 2022, and staged the last Titleholders Championship in 1972. Those tournaments were won by Annika Sörenstam, Karrie Webb, Cristie Kerr, Minjee Lee, and Sandra Palmer respectively. Carol Mann
Carol Mann (February 3, 1941 – May 20, 2018) was an American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1961 and won two major championships and 38 LPGA Tour events in all. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Amateur career Mann was born in Buffalo, New York and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and Chicago, Illinois. She started playing golf at the age of 9. She won the Western Junior and the Chicago Junior in 1958, and the Chicago Women's Amateur in 1960. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Professional career Mann turned pro in 1960 and joined the LPGA Tour in 1961. She won her first tournament in 1964 at the Women's Western Open, a major championship at the time. Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. JoAnne Carner
JoAnne Gunderson Carner (born April 4, 1939) is an American former professional golfer. Her 43 victories on the LPGA Tour led to her induction in the World Golf Hall of Fame. She is the only woman to have won the U.S. Girls' Junior, U.S. Women's Amateur, and U.S. Women's Open titles, and was the first person ever to win three different USGA championship events. Tiger Woods is the only man to have won the equivalent three USGA titles. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Carol Semple Thompson have also won three different USGA titles. Carner was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 1969. In 1981, Carner was voted the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. Clifford Ann Creed (born September 23, 1938) is a retired American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1963 and won eleven LPGA Tour events in all. Amateur career Creed was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, and started playing golf at age 11. She graduated from Lamar Tech in 1960 with a degree in physical education. She won the Louisiana State Women's Amateur six times between 1955 and 1961, and won the Western Junior in 1956. In 1962, she won the North and South Women's Amateur, the South Atlantic Amateur and was a member of the United States Curtis Cup team. She is a former Louisiana Sports Athlete of the Year. Marilynn Louise Smith (April 13, 1929 – April 9, 2019) was an American professional golfer. She was one of the thirteen founders of the LPGA in 1950. She won two major championships and 21 LPGA Tour events in all. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Amateur career Smith was born in Topeka, Kansas. She started playing golf at age 12.
