The 1972 Pioneer Bowl was a college football bowl game in Texas, played between the Drake Bulldogs and Tennessee State at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. The second edition of the Pioneer Bowl, it was one of four regional finals in the College Division played on December 9. The division became Division II (and III) the following season. Tennessee State jumped out early and built a 22–0 halftime lead; each team scored a second half touchdown and the final score was 29–7. It was the Tigers' fourth consecutive bowl win. Memorial Stadium is an American football and soccer stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas located on Southwest Parkway at Barnett Road. It is owned and operated by the Wichita Falls Independent School District. History Built in 1970, the stadium can seat 14,500 fans with room for 2,500 more and is one of the largest high school football stadiums in the state of Texas. Some of the stadium's attractions include parking for up to 3,600 cars, a two-story press box for visiting coaches, dignitaries, and the media, as well as an artificial turf playing surface and a state of the art scoreboard, most of which were added several years after the stadium's initial opening. Pioneer Bowl (1971–1982)
The Pioneer Bowl was an annual college football postseason game held at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas, from 1971 through 1978 and again in 1981 and 1982. The game originated as an NCAA College Division regional final, then became a playoff game for Division II and Division I-AA. History The Pioneer Bowl originated as one of the four regional finals of the College Division, before it was subdivided into Division II and Division III in 1973. NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that choose not to offer athletic scholarships to their student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956, the College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. NCAA Division II (D-II) is an intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III.
