1972 LPGA Championship
The 1972 LPGA Championship was the 18th LPGA Championship, held June 8–11 at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, Massachusetts, southeast of Worcester. Kathy Ahern shot a final round 69 (−4) to win her only major title, six strokes ahead of runner-up Jane Blalock. Ahern began the final round with a one-stroke lead over three players; after five straight birdies on the front nine, she had a six-stroke lead and shot even par on the final nine. Three weeks later, Ahern was a runner-up by a stroke at the U.S. Women's Open at Winged Foot, then won the week after at the George Washington Classic near Philadelphia. 1972 LPGA Tour
The 1972 LPGA Tour was the 23rd season since the LPGA Tour officially began in 1950. The season ran from January 5 to November 5. The season consisted of 29 official money events. Kathy Whitworth won the most tournaments, five. Whitworth led the money list with earnings of $65,063. The season saw the first tournament with a $100,000 purse, the Dinah Shore Colgate Winner's Circle ($110,000). It also saw the first player to win over $50,000 in a season, Whitworth. There were two first-time winners in 1972: Betty Burfeindt and Betsy Cullen. This season saw the return, for 1972 only, of the LPGA major, the Titleholders Championship. Louise Suggs
Mae Louise Suggs (September 7, 1923 – August 7, 2015) was an American professional golfer, one of the founders of the LPGA Tour and thus modern ladies' golf. Amateur career Born in Atlanta, Suggs had a very successful amateur career, beginning as a teenager. She won the Georgia State Amateur in 1940 at age 16 and again in 1942, was the Southern Amateur Champion in 1941 and 1947, and won the North and South Women's Amateur three times (1942, 1946, 1948). She won the 1946 and 1947 Women's Western Amateur and the 1946 and 1947 Women's Western Open, which was designated as a major championship when the LPGA was founded. She also won the 1946 Titleholders Championship which was also subsequently designated as a women's major. She won the 1947 U.S. Women's Amateur and the next year won the British Ladies Amateur. The 1969 LPGA Championship was the fifteenth LPGA Championship, held July 24–27 at Concord Golf Club in Kiamesha Lake, New York. 1959 LPGA Championship
The 1959 LPGA Championship was the fifth LPGA Championship, held July 2–6 at Sheraton Hotel Country Club in French Lick, Indiana. Betsy Rawls won the first of her two LPGA Championships, one stroke ahead of Patty Berg. The final round on Sunday was delayed to Monday due to heavy rain and unplayable greens. Defending champion Mickey Wright finished nine strokes back in eighth place. It was the fourth of eight major titles for Rawls. The course was designed by Donald Ross; it opened in 1917 and was originally known as the "Hill Course." It hosted the PGA Championship in 1924, the second of five won by Walter Hagen and the first of four consecutive. It is now named the "Donald Ross Course." Betsy Rawls
Elizabeth Earle "Betsy" Rawls (born May 4, 1928) is an American former LPGA Tour professional golfer. She won eight major championship and 55 LPGA Tour career events. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Early life and education Rawls was the daughter of Robert Miller and Mary Earle Rawls. She was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and moved to Arlington, Texas, in 1940. She went on to graduate from Lovelady High School and enrolled in North Texas Agricultural College (now UT-Arlington) in 1946 as a physics major. As a freshman, she was recognized by faculty and department heads as a "Who's Who" in Physics, and was selected for the Phi Kappa Theta honor society. The following year Rawls transferred to the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with a degree in physics in 1950. Amateur career Rawls started playing golf at age 17. The 1964 LPGA Championship was the tenth LPGA Championship, held October 1–4 at Stardust Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mary Mills shot a final round 69 (−2) to win the first of her two LPGA Championships, two strokes ahead runner-up Mickey Wright, the defending champion and 54-hole leader. Mary Mills (golfer)
Mary Mills (born January 19, 1940) is a retired American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1962 and won three major championships and nine LPGA Tour victories in all. Amateur career Mills was born in Laurel, Mississippi. She began playing golf at age 11 and her instructor was Johnny Revolta, an 18-time PGA Tour winner and PGA Championship victor. She won the Mississippi State Amateur eight consecutive years starting in 1954, and won the Gulf Coast Amateur twice. She was also medalist in the U.S. Girls' Junior, Western Junior, and the National Collegiate Championship. She attended Millsaps College where she was the No. 1 golfer – on the men's team – all four years. Professional career Mills turned pro and joined the LPGA Tour in 1962, and earned LPGA Rookie of the Year honors. 1967 LPGA Championship
The 1967 LPGA Championship was the thirteenth LPGA Championship, held July 13–16 at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, Massachusetts, southeast of Worcester. Kathy Whitworth sank a birdie putt on the final hole to win the first of her three LPGA Championships, one stroke ahead of runner-up Shirley Englehorn; the two were in the final pairing as 54-hole co-leaders at 215 (−4). With three holes to play, Whitworth led by two strokes, but an Englehorn birdie on 16 and a Whitworth bogey on 17 left them tied on the final tee. Kathy Whitworth
Kathrynne Ann Whitworth (September 27, 1939 – December 24, 2022) was an American professional golfer. During her playing career she won 88 LPGA Tour tournaments, more than anyone else on the LPGA or PGA Tours. Whitworth was also a runner-up 93 times, giving her 181 top-two finishes. In 1981, she became the first woman to reach career earnings of $1 million on the LPGA Tour. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Gloria Jean Ehret (born August 23, 1941) is a former American professional golfer best known for winning the 1966 LPGA Championship.
