1972 Jammu And Kashmir Legislative Assembly Election
Elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly were held in January 1972 to elect members of 114 constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The Indian National Congress won the popular vote and a majority of seats and Syed Mir Qasim was appointed as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. After this election, women entered the Jammu and Kashmir assembly for the first time. Ten women had filed their nominations, six of them contested and four won their seats. This made the percentage of women legislators 5.33% in the Jammu Kashmir assembly. The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly also known as the Jammu and Kashmir Vidhan Sabha is the legislature of Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was dissolved by the Governor on 21 November 2018. Prior to 2019, the State of Jammu and Kashmir had a bicameral legislature with a legislative assembly (lower house) and a legislative council (upper house). The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, passed by the Parliament of India in August 2019, replaced this with a unicameral legislature while also re-organising the state into a union territory. Following is the list of the constituencies in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act was passed to reconstitute the state of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in 2019. In March 2020, a three-member Delimitation Commission was formed, chaired by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, for the delimitation of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The final delimitation report was released on 5 May 2022 under which additional 6 seats were added to Jammu division and 1 seat to Kashmir division, taking the total tally to 90 seats. The final delimitation report came into force from 20 May 2022. Mohammad Shafi Uri popularly known as Babbar Sher (Lion) is a former member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir was the title given to the head of government of Jammu and Kashmir. As per the Constitution of India, the Lieutenant Governor is the state's ''de jure'' head, but ''de facto'' executive authority rests with the chief minister. The Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir or Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JIJK) is an Islamic political party based in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is distinct from the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. The organisation's stated position on the Kashmir conflict is that Kashmir is a disputed territory and the issue must be sorted as per UN or through tripartite talks between India, Pakistan and representatives of Kashmir. The Bharatiya Jana Sangh ( BJS or JS, short name: Jan Sangh, full name: Akhil Bharatiya Jana Sangh; ) (ISO 15919: '' Akhila Bhāratīya Jana Saṅgha '' ) was an Indian right wing political party that existed from 1951 to 1977 and was the political arm of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation.
