1971–72 Serie A (basketball)
The 1971–72 Serie A basketball championship was the 49th season of the Serie A, the highest professional basketball league in Italy. The regular season ran from 24 October 1971 to 4 April 1972, twelve teams played 22 games each. As Simmenthal Milano and Ignis Varese ended joint first with an equal head-to-head record, a single playoff game decided the title for the second year running. Milano won the game, played in Rome, to break Varese's three-year title streak, taking home their nineteenth overall title (and a spot in the European Champions Cup). To accommodate a league expansion to 14 teams due the following year, only one side was relegated that season, newly promoted Stella Azzurra Roma went straight back to the Serie B. 1970–71 Serie A (basketball)
The 1970–71 Serie A basketball championship was the 48th season of the Lega Basket Serie A, Serie A, the highest professional basketball league in Italy. The regular season ran from 18 October 1970 to 28 March 1971, twelve teams played 22 games each. As both Ignis Varese and Simmenthal Milano were tied first with the same head-to-head record (having only lost once apiece, to each other) a single playoff game decided the title, the third ever played between the two squads (one on-the-court win per side, respectively in 1962 and 1966). Varese won the game played in Rome to earn their third straight championship, fifth overall (and the single spot in the 1971–72 FIBA European Champions Cup, European Champions Cup). The other end of the league table also saw a tie, with three teams on the same points for two relegation spots, hence playoffs were also played where Libertas Livorno and Cecchi Biella (both newly promoted) were relegated back to the Serie A2 Basket, Serie B. Dino Meneghin
Dino Meneghin (, ; born 18 January 1950) is an Italian former professional basketball player. He is widely considered to be the best Italian player ever, as well as one of Europe's all-time greats. A 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in) tall center, Meneghin was born in Alano di Piave, Veneto (northeast Italy). On 20 November 1966, when he was 16 years old, he played in his first game in the Italian League, with Ignis Varese. He played the last game of his career at the age of 45. In 2003, Meneghin became a Basketball Hall of Fame player and in 2010, he became a FIBA Hall of Fame player. Professional career In total, Meneghin played in 836 games and scored 8,560 points in the Italian League championship. Meneghin became the second player from a European league to be drafted by an NBA team, when the Atlanta Hawks manager Marty Blake selected him with a late-round pick in the 1970 NBA draft. Carlo Recalcati
Carlo Recalcati (born September 11, 1945 in Milan, Italy) is an Italian professional basketball coach, and a former player. He was the head coach of the senior Italian national basketball team, from 2001 to 2009, and led them to the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, and the bronze medal at the EuroBasket 2003. Playing career As a player on the club level, Recalcati played for Pallacanestro Cantù (1962–1979, winning the Italian League championship in 1968 and 1975), and Pallacanestro Parma (1979–1981). He also played for the senior Italian national team, from 1967 to 1975 (winning the bronze at EuroBasket 1971 and EuroBasket 1975). Pierluigi Marzorati
Pierluigi "Pierlo" Marzorati (born 12 September 1952) is an Italian former professional basketball player. He is considered to have been one of the best point guards of all time in Europe, and was named the Mister Europa, in 1976. He was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991. In 2007, he was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame and enshrined into the FIBA Hall of Fame. In 2008, he was chosen as one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors. Renzo Bariviera
Renzo Bariviera (born 16 February 1949) is a retired Italian professional basketball player. In 2012, he was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame.
