1970 World Weightlifting Championships
The 1970 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Columbus, Ohio, United States from September 12 to September 20, 1970. There were 129 men from 28 nations in the competition. Nine weightlifters (Sandor Holczreiter, Walter Szoltysek, Vladimir Smetanin, Imre Földi, Henryk Trebicki, Miecyslaw Nowak, Jan Wojnowski, Yoshiyuki Miyake, Janos Bagocs) test positive for amphetamines (Dexedrine) and were disqualified. The urine samples were tested using the Beckman DK-2A ratio recording ultraviolet spectrophotometer. Ondrej Hekel
Ondrej Hekel (16 February 1944 – 23 July 2009) was a Czechoslovak male weightlifter, who competed in the 67.5 kg category and represented Czechoslovakia at international competitions. During his career, Ondrej Hekel was Czechoslovakia's best weightlifter. For 12 years in a row, he won a national title (first in the lightweight, later middleweight), and he was named Czechoslovakian lifter of the year on three occasions. Internationally, his only overall medal came at the 1971 European Championships, where he placed third. In 1972, he was close to the medals at the Olympics (doubling as the World Championships), placing 4th. But Hekel collected event medals in the snatch, winning twice at the Europeans and once at the World Championships (1971). Russell Lowell Knipp (May 21, 1942 – April 9, 2006) was an American weightlifter who held nine world records and thirty-four American records. He was born May 21, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He competed in two Olympic games for the U.S. team: Mexico City in 1968 and Munich, Germany in 1972. During his career he won seventeen gold medals in international competition and was a three-time U.S. national champion and two-time Pan American Games champion. He was inducted in the USAW Hall of Fame and the Helms Amateur Athletes Hall of Fame in Los Angeles. He set nine world records in press during his career. Waldemar Romuald Baszanowski (15 August 1935 – 29 April 2011) was a Polish lightweight (-67.5 kg) weightlifter. In 1969, he was chosen the Polish Sportspersonality of the Year. Biography Baszanowski was born in Grudziądz on 15 August 1935. A month after his 25th birthday he competed for the World Championships in his sport. He became over the course of the next ten years the most decorated lightweight weightlifter at international level in the first century of its widespread competition, the 20th century. Baszanowski set 24 world and 61 national records. He won gold medals at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics, five world championships and five silver medals, giving him a total of 10 medals, more than any weightlifter in history (to date). His first wife Anita was killed in a car accident in 1969, 8 July, in which he was the driver; Baszanowski and his son survived.
