1971 US Open – Women's Singles
Billie Jean King defeated Rosemary Casals in the final, 6–4, 7–6(5–2) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1971 US Open. Margaret Court was the two-time reigning champion, but did not defend her title. This tournament marked the first major in which future world No. 1 and 18-time major champion Chris Evert competed in the main draw; she lost to King in the semifinals. Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King (née Moffitt; born November 22, 1943) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 major titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. In 1973, at age 29, she won the " Battle of the Sexes" tennis match against the 55-year-old Bobby Riggs. King was also the founder of the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation. Sue Stap
Susan Stap Kust (born June 3, 1954) is an American former professional tennis player. A native of Deerfield, Illinois, Stap was ranked as high as 34 in the world while competing on the professional tour during the 1970s. She and her sister Sandy were coached by their father, Jake Stap, who in his youth was a good enough baseball pitcher to be signed by the Chicago White Sox and is credited with inventing the tennis ball hopper. Stap made the singles third round at the 1972 Wimbledon Championships and was a two-time US Open quarter-finalist in mixed doubles. Cecilia Martinez (born May 24, 1947) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Martinez, born and raised in San Francisco by a single mother, is one of five siblings and learned her tennis playing on public courts. She attended San Francisco State College and won the singles event at the USTA Intercollegiate National Championships in 1966. Valerie Bradshaw (née Ziegenfuss; June 29, 1949) is an American former female professional tennis player. She started as an amateur player at the beginning of the 1970s, then turned professional. She is most famous for being one of the Original 9 with eight of her fellow players, who rebelled against the United States Tennis Association in 1970. Their actions brought about the creation of the Virginia Slims Circuit, which was the basis for the WTA Tour. During her career, she reached the fourth round at the French Open (in 1972) and the US Open on two occasions ( 1969 and 1975). Sandy Stap
Sandra Stap Clifton (born May 1, 1956) is an American former professional tennis coach and player. Stap grew up in Deerfield, Illinois, and was coached by her father, Jake, an ex-baseball player who invented the tennis ball hopper. Her elder sister, Sue Stap, also played professional tennis. An Orange Bowl (16s) winner in 1970, Stap spent the next decade on tour and also played varsity tennis for Trinity University, where she was a three-time All-American. She married Richard Leon Cawley in January 1977, and married William Timothy Cape in October 1986.
