The 1971 NCAA University Division Wrestling Championships were the 41st NCAA University Division Wrestling Championships to be held. Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama hosted the tournament at Memorial Coliseum. Oklahoma State took home the team championship with 94 points and three individual champions. Collegiate wrestling (also known as folkstyle wrestling) is the form of wrestling practiced at the college and university level in the United States. This style of wrestling, with some slight modifications, is also practiced at high school and middle school levels, and also among younger participants. The rules and style of collegiate or folkstyle wrestling differs from other styles of wrestling that are practiced around the world such as those in the Olympic Games, freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. Women's wrestling at the US college level uses two different rulesets. NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It also organizes the athletic programs of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in college sports. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Until 1957, the NCAA was a single division for all schools. David Joyner (athletic Director)
David M. Joyner, an orthopedic physician and a former member of the Penn State University Board of Trustees, was the former Athletic Director for Penn State. He played football for Penn State in the 1970s. He wrestled for Penn State as well, finishing second in the 1971 NCAA Championships at heavyweight. He graduated from Penn State in 1972 with a degree in science, and received his medical doctorate from Penn State in 1976. He worked as an orthopedic surgeon, and later worked with the World Football League. He focused his career on sports medicine, e.g. as chair of the United States Olympic Sports Medicine Committee. The Toledo Rockets are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Toledo. The Rockets compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The school's colors are midnight blue and gold. Ben Peterson
Benjamin Lee "Ben" Peterson (born June 27, 1950) is a retired American freestyle wrestler. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won a gold and a silver medal, respectively. As a college wrestler, Peterson was a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State. He founded the "Camp of Champs," which brought in Olympic wrestlers to train with high schoolers. Peterson also coached wrestling at Maranatha Baptist University for 28 years. Early life Peterson was born in Barron County, Wisconsin but grew up on a dairy farm in nearby Comstock. the Iowa State Cyclones Carl Adams (born 1950) is an American retired wrestler, coach, businessman, and inventor. Early life Adams grew up in Bay Shore, New York attending Brentwood Ross High School. His senior year he wrestled under legendary coach Joe Campo at 157 lbs and never lost a dual meet en route to winning the State Championship at his weight class. Wrestling career Following his standout prep career, Adams continued his wrestling at Iowa State. As a freshman he wrestled at the 152 lbs weight class where he compiled a 9–2–1 dual mark and finished fifth at the NCAA Championship.
