1971 International Cross Country Championships
The 1971 International Cross Country Championships was held in San Sebastián, Spain, at the Lasarte Hippodrome on 20 March 1971. A report on the event was given in the Glasgow Herald. International Cross Country Union
The International Cross Country Union (ICCU) was the first major international sports governing body for cross country running. Created in 1903, it launched the International Cross Country Championships that same year. Originally a grouping for contests between the four Home Nations of the British Isles (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales), the body was symbolic of the increasing co-operation of the older national bodies found in those nations. The organisation expanded to include France in 1907 and by the 50th annual edition of the championships it included countries of North Africa and Western Europe, the United States, and New Zealand. The appearance of France directly led to the inclusion of athletes of French colonial empire, its colonies and ultimately Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco competed independently at the competition. Bernardina Maria "Berny" Boxem-Lenferink (née Lenferink on 12 May 1948) is a retired Dutch middle-distance runner. Anthony 'Tony' Derrick Simmons (born 6 October 1948) is a male former athlete. Athletics career Simmons represented England in the 1974 British Commonwealth Games, in Christchurch, New Zealand finishing seventh in the 10,000 metres. Four years later he represented his birth country (Wales) in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, finishing sixth in the 10,000 metres and seventh in the 5,000 metres. He won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1974 European Athletics Championships, finishing 4 hundredths of a second behind the gold medallist. In the 1976 Summer Olympics he qualified for the finals of the 10,000 metres, finishing 4th. He set a world best for the half-marathon at Welwyn Garden City, England on 24 June 1978 of 62 minutes 47 seconds. The mark stood for nearly 16 months until eclipsed by Nick Rose. Lucien Rault (born 30 March 1936 in Plouguenast) is a French long-distance runner. He represented France in the 1976 Olympics at the age of 40. He had an extensive career in cross country running with his national squad at the International Cross Country Championships and then the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Five days before his 42nd birthday, he was the #2 runner on the French World Championship team at the 1978 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, his first world championship. He is the current ratified world record holder in the masters M45 5000 metres. He has also held the M35 and M40 records and the M35 and M40 records at 10000 metres. He began running at age 15. Gaston, Baron Roelants (born 5 February 1937), is a Belgian former elite steeplechaser and cross country runner. He won the 1962 European and 1964 Olympic titles in the 3000 m steeplechase and twice broke the world record. Biography Roelants finished fourth in the steeplechase at the 1960 Olympics, and after winning a bronze medal at the 1966 European Championships he successfully turned to longer distances, setting world records in the 20 km (58 minutes 6.2 seconds) and in the 1 hour race (20,664 m) that year. Pekka Johannes Päivärinta (born 4 May 1949 in Aura) is a Finnish former long-distance runner. He won men's senior race in the first World Championships of cross-country running in 1973. He competed in 1972 Olympics at 3000-meter steeplechase finishing 8th. In 1976 Olympics he competed in 5000 meters and finished 13th. In 1975 he broke world record in 25000 meters running by his result 1:14:16,8. The record was broken by Bill Rodgers in 1979. Contrary to his fellow Finnish long-distance runner — and age mate — Lasse Virén, Päivärinta underachieved in the major outdoor international championships of his active running career. Rodney Phillip Dixon (born 13 July 1950) is a former New Zealand middle- to long-distance runner. He won the bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the New Zealand at the 1972 Summer Olympics, 1972 Olympics in Munich, and in 1983 won the New York City Marathon. Biography Dixon was born on 13 July 1950 in Nelson, New Zealand. Ian Stewart MBE (born 15 January 1949) is a Scottish former long-distance running athlete. Ian Stewart was one of the world's leading distance runners between the late 1960s and mid-1970s. Stewart won the bronze medal in the Men's 5000 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich (a race won by Lasse Virén). Stewart also won the following championships: European 5,000 metres (1969), Commonwealth 5,000 metres (1970), European Indoor (1969 and 1975) and World Cross Country (1975). Mariano Haro
Mariano Haro Cisneros (born 27 May 1940) is a former Spanish athlete, competing in the long-distance events. He was born in Becerril de Campos. Haro ran almost compulsively using his gifted legs to run errands and handle odd jobs. He soon became prominently competitive in a sport he hardly chose. In the 1960s he won almost every 5,000 and 10,000 meter event held in Spain. His closest Spanish competitor was Javier Alvarez Salgado. Haro placed 4th in the 10,000-meter 1972 Summer Olympics final at Munich in an epic battle against Lasse Virén, Emiel Puttemans, Miruts Yifter, and Frank Shorter.
