1971 Davis Cup Europe Zone
The Europe Zone was one of the three regional zones of the 1971 Davis Cup. 30 teams entered the Europe Zone, competing across 2 sub-zones. The winners of each sub-zone went on to compete in the Inter-Zonal Zone against the winners of the Americas Zone and Eastern Zone. Czechoslovakia defeated Romania in the Zone A final, and West Germany defeated Spain in the Zone B final, resulting in both Czechoslovakia and Romania progressing to the Inter-Zonal Zone. Peter Jackson (22 September 1934 — 10 October 2014) was an Irish international tennis player originating from Northern Ireland. Raised in Belfast, UK, Jackson was a junior rugby representative for Ulster before settling on tennis. He attended the Belfast Royal Academy and played his tennis at thWindsor Lawn Tennis Club although he began his career with Cavehill. An Irish number one for nine consecutive years, he featured at both Wimbledon and the U.S. National Championships during his career. Michael Hickey (tennis)
Michael Hickey, originally of Manhasset, New York, is a screenwriter best known for the screenplay of the horror film ''Silent Night, Deadly Night''. Hickey's controversial screenplay focused on a serial killer who, disguised as Santa Claus, takes the lyric "He knows if you've been bad or good so be good for goodness sake" rather too literally. Hickey also authored the stage play ''Murrow'' about the life of newscaster Edward R. Murrow, which premiered at the Bristol Riverside Theater in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Hickey directed a production of the play at the Producers Club in New York City under the title ''A Question of Loyalty'' in 1998. Pekka Säilä
Pekka Säilä (20 December 1941 – 7 December 2009) was a tennis player from Finland. Tennis career Säilä made his debut for the Finland Davis Cup team during the 1962 Europe Zone second round tie against Czechoslovakia. During his sixteen-year Davis Cup career, he played in twenty-three Davis Cup singles rubbers, seven of which he won, and he also played in thirteen doubles rubbers, with two wins. During 1967, Säilä was recruited to attend college in the United States at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He played for the university tennis team and graduated in 1970. Säilä participated at the Wimbledon Championships on two occasions, with a best result of reaching the third round in 1967, before losing to the British player, Roger Taylor. George Luis Sören Berner (born 4 April 1944) is a former tennis player from Finland. Tennis career Berner attended college in the United States at Davidson College in North Carolina during 1967 and 1968. Berner was a regular member of the Finland Davis Cup team for the period 1969 to 1981. He made his debut in the 1969 Europe Zone A first round tie against Sweden. His last appearance was as a doubles player in the 1981 Europe Zone B semi-final against the Netherlands. François Jauffret (born 9 February 1942) is a retired professional tennis player from France. He holds the record for most ties played for the France Davis Cup team with 35, between 1964 and 1978. Hans Nerell
Hans Sven Torstensson Nerell (born 27 September 1944) is a former tennis player from Sweden. Tennis career Nerell represented Sweden at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 when tennis was a demonstration sport. He lost in the first round of the singles event to the American, Herbert Fitzgibbon. Nerell was a regular member of the Swedish Davis Cup team between 1968 and 1971, playing in six ties. His first appearance was against Rhodesia in the 1968 Davis Cup Europe Zone, first-round tie that was scheduled for Båstad, Sweden. A demonstrators protest, that became known as the Båstad riots, against the political situation in Rhodesia, caused the tie to be moved to Bandol, France. Håkan Zahr (16 April 1948 – 4 October 2015) was a Swedish tennis player. Patrick Proisy (born 10 September 1949) is a French former professional tennis player best remembered for reaching the final of the French Open in 1972 (where he beat top seed and defending champion Jan Kodeš in the quarter-finals and fourth seed Manuel Orantes in the semi-finals before losing the final against sixth seeded Spaniard Andrés Gimeno in four sets).
