Soviet Top League
The Soviet Top League, known after 1970 as the Higher League (russian: Чемпионат СССР по футболу: Высшая лига), served as the top division of Soviet Union football from 1936 until 1991. The professional top level of football competition among clubs was established in 1936 on proposition of Nikolai Starostin and was approved by the All-Union Council of Physical Culture. Originally it was named Group A. After World War II it became known as the First Group. In 1950, after another reform of football in the Soviet Union, the First Group was replaced with Class A. By 1970, the Class A had expanded to three tiers with the top tier known as the Higher Group which in 1971 was renamed into the Higher League. It was one of the best football leagues in Europe, ranking second among the UEFA members in 1988–89 seasons. FC Chornomorets Odesa ( ) is a Ukrainian professional Association football, football club based in Odesa. Valeriy Semenovych Porkuyan ( uk, Валерій Семенович Поркуян, born 4 October 1944 in Kirovohrad, Ukrainian SSR, now Ukraine) is a former Ukraine, Ukrainian football (soccer), footballer of Armenian descent who played for Dynamo Kyiv. Playing career Club Porkuyan began playing for the youth team of Kirovohrad's local club, FC Zirka Kirovohrad, Zvezda. In 1962 he made the transition to the senior team of Zvezda. After three successful seasons there he was spotted by a former FC Chornomorets Odessa, Chernomorets Odessa player and then assistant coach, Matvey Cherkassky, who helped him transfer from the Soviet Second League B to the Soviet Top League club Chernomorets. Luhansk
Luhansk (, ; uk, Луганськ, ), also known as Lugansk (, ; russian: Луганск, ), is a city in what is internationally recognised as Ukraine, although it is administered by Russia as capital of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). 1971–72 UEFA Cup
The 1971–72 UEFA Cup was the inaugural year of the UEFA Cup (now known as the UEFA Europa League), which effectively replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. It was won by English side Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Tottenham Hotspur over their countrymen Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., Wolverhampton Wanderers 3–2 on aggregate after a two-legged final. The tournament was open to the highest-placed European teams that had not qualified for the UEFA Champions League, European Cup or UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
