Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Espen Rud
Espen Rud (born 29 January 1948 in Asker, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (drums), composer, and music arranger, and the son of Norwegian author Nils Johan Rud (1908–93). He is known from numerous recordings and in collaboration with Karin Krog and Dexter Gordon, within Terje Rypdal's trio Min Bul, or the absurd musical theater of Svein Finnerud Trio. Career Rud joined the fri jazz band Svein Finnerud Trio (1967–74), was educated at the Norges Musikkhøgskole (1968), was percussionist within Pompel og Pilt (1969), was part of ''Min bul'' (1970) in trio with Terje Rypdal and Bjørnar Andresen, and contributed on the Karin Krog album ''Some other spring'' (1970), where Dexter Gordon and Kenny Drew also contributed. He also played within the Ivar Antonsen Trio, and led his own Quartet together with Ivar Antonsen, Ditlef Eckhoff and Sture Janson, performing at Moldejazz in 1969. Kjersti Stubø
Kjersti Aasan Stubø (born 25 April 1970) is a Norwegian Jazz musician vocalist, daughter and musical successor of Jazz guitarist Thorgeir Stubø (1943–1986), mother of elektronica musician Mathias Stubø (b. 1992), and sister of Jazz guitarist Håvard and theatre director Eirik Stubø. Career Stubø was born in Narvik, and studied jazz on the Jazz program at the Trondheim Music Conservatory (1991–93). Aged 14 she performed with her father, Thorgeir, who died from cancer two years later. During her studies in Trondheim she established her own Jazz orchestra ''Kjersti Stubø Band'' in 1991. Co-musicians on this project were Vigleik Storaas (piano), Tore Brunborg (saxophones), Odd Magne Gridseth (bass) and Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk (drums). Leif Ove Andsnes
Leif Ove Andsnes (; born 7 April 1970) is a Norwegian pianist and chamber musician. Andsnes has made several recordings for Virgin and EMI. In 2012, Leif Ove Andsnes has signed to Sony Classical, and recorded for the label the "Beethoven Journey" project, which included the composer's five piano concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. The works were recorded over three years, beginning with Piano Concertos Nos 1 and 3 in 2012, followed by Concertos Nos 2 and 4 in 2013 and the Fifth Piano Concerto and ''Choral Fantasy'' in 2014. He is represented by IMG. Biography Andsnes was born at Karmøy and studied with Jiří Hlinka at the Bergen Music Conservatory, making his debut in Oslo in 1987. Tone Lise Moberg
Tone Lise Moberg (born 1 April 1970 in Os, Hordaland, Norway) is a Norwegian singer and song teacher. Biography Moberg acquired jazz by writing songs at the piano and doing her own versions of jazz standards. She studied jazz at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, formed several bands, and performed on jazzfestivals and jazzclubs in Norway. She also lived and performed in England for many years as song student of the Leeds City College. She was based in Trondheim for some years while attending the Jazz program at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), before settling down in Bergen. Here she studied at the Grieg Academy. Her debut solo album ''Looking On'' (2006) was recorded with drummer Stein Inge Brækhus, bassist Torbjørn Hillersøy, keyboarder Eivind Austad, and trumpeter Snorre Farstad. Live Maria Roggen
Live Maria Roggen (born 22 March 1970) is a Norwegian jazz singer, songwriter and composer. Roggen was born in Oslo and educated at Foss High School (violin and vocals). She studied sociology and Musicology intermediate at the University of Oslo and Jazz Line at Trøndelag Conservatory of Music ( NTNU) (1995–1998). She worked as a jazz and singing teacher at the Sund folkehøgskole, Høgskolen in Agder (music conservatory) and at Trøndelag Conservatory of Music (NTNU). Since 2006, Associate Professor, and since 2012 has been Professor of jazz singing at the Norwegian Academy of Music. She is the older sister of the twin sisters Ane Carmen and Ida Roggen from the Norwegian vocal band Pitsj. Career Roggen first appeared in the duo Tu'Ba with the tuba player Lars Andreas Haug 1994. Harald Johnsen
Harald Gill Johnsen (19 March 1970 – 24 July 2011) was a Norwegian jazz double bassist, known for his contributions in bands like Køhn/Johansen Sextet and Tord Gustavsen Trio, and a series of recordings with such as Sonny Simmons, Sigurd Køhn, Nils-Olav Johansen, Jan Erik Kongshaug, Frode Barth, Per Oddvar Johansen and Ditlef Eckhoff. Career Johnsen was a graduate of the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (NTNU, 1989–92). He participated in the "two basses event" with the Trygve Seim led ''Trondheim Art Orchestra'' later called ''Trygve Seim Ensemble''. Karoline Krüger
Karoline Krüger (born 13 February 1970 in Bergen, Norway) is a Norwegian singer, actress and composer. Career Krüger's first TV appearance was at the age of 11, in a youth show called ''Halvsju''. She got her breakthrough in 1988, first by winning the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix with the song "For vår jord" ("For Our Earth"), still a student at Langhaugen Skole (1986–89). This qualified her for the Eurovision Song Contest 1988 final, held that year in the Irish capital Dublin, where she finished fifth. Later that same year she released her debut CD, ''Fasetter''. She sings the ballad ''You Call It Love'', from the film ''L'etudiante'', a song composed by Vladimir Cosma. The song was covered by Richard Sanderson. Eldbjørg Raknes
Eldbjørg Raknes (born 9 February 1970 in Midsund, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz vocalist known for her a cappella vocal performances, innovative improvised vocals and electronic effects. She has collaborated with musicians such as Jon Balke, Anders Jormin, Bendik Hofseth, Christian Wallumrød, Arve Henriksen, Ketil Bjørnstad, and Ståle Storløkken. Eskil Brøndbo
Eskil Brøndbo (born 26 January 1970 in Namsos) is the drummer in the band D.D.E. where his brother, Bjarne Brøndbo is the vocalist. He is cousin of the Electronica musician Rune "Sternklang" Brøndbo. From 1985 – 1986 he was the deputy drummer for After Dark, who were the forerunners for D.D.E., but their regular drummer, Knut Håvard Lysberg, left the group. In 1990 Lysberg left and Eskil Brøndbo became the permanent drummer. After Dark changed their name to D.D.E. in 1992 and became the country's best selling band. Brøndbo is active in local politics. ''Verdens Gang'' ("The course of the world"), generally known under the abbreviation ''VG'', is a Norwegian tabloid newspaper. In 2016, circulation numbers stood at 93,883, having declined from a peak circulation of 390,510 in 2002. ''VG'' is nevertheless the most read online newspaper in Norway, with about 2 million daily readers. Verdens Gang AS is a private company wholly owned by the public company Schibsted.
