1969–70 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Season
Huddersfield Town's 1969–70 campaign saw Town crowned as champions of Division 2. They outclassed the rest of the division and finished 7 points clear of 2nd placed Blackpool. Town's team were largely unchanged for most of the season, with 7 members of the team (Dennis Clarke, Roy Ellam, Geoff Hutt, Jimmy McGill, Jimmy Nicholson, Terry Poole and Frank Worthington) played every league match that season. They gained promotion to the 1st Division for the first time since the 1955-56 season. Squad at the start of the season Review Following a successful end to the previous season, many were hoping that Town could possibly mount a serious promotion challenge to Division 1. A good start to the season followed with 3 wins from the first 3 games against Oxford United, Aston Villa and Preston North End. Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. Stephen "Steve" Smith (born 28 April 1946 in Huddersfield) is an English former professional footballer and football manager. He played football as a player for Huddersfield Town and Halifax Town. He also coached Huddersfield Town and Bradford City, the latter as caretaker. Smith began his career at Leeds Road as an apprentice in 1961 and turned professional in 1963. He spent 16 years as a player at Leeds Road before a two year spell at Halifax Town. Colin Dobson
Colin Dobson (born 9 May 1940) is an English former professional footballer who played as an inside-forward. He has also had a long career in coaching and has coached domestic and national teams in Arabia. He began his career with Sheffield Wednesday in 1961, and went on to score 52 goals in 193 games for the First Division club. He was sold on to Huddersfield Town for a £20,000 fee in August 1966, and helped the club to the Second Division title in 1969–70. He was loaned out to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1972, before joining Bristol Rovers as a player-coach in the summer. He was promoted out of the Third Division with Rovers in 1973–74. Ray Mielczarek
Raymond "Ray" Mielczarek (10 February 1946 – 30 October 2013) was a Welsh professional footballer who gained 1 cap for Wales during his career. He was of both Polish and Luxembourgian descent. Club career As a youngster, Mielczarek was persuaded to become an apprentice at Wrexham by club coach Ken Roberts and later captained Wales at youth level whilst playing in the team's reserve side. He made his professional league debut in 1964 against Aldershot before establishing himself in the first team. In September 1967, he left to join Huddersfield Town for a fee of around £20,000 but a snapped cruciate ligament injury sustained after playing just 25 games for the club eventually lead to him leaving to sign for Rotherham United in January 1971. After making over 100 appearances for Rotherham, he was forced to retire when he suffered a recurrence of his cruciate ligament injury. Trevor Cherry
Trevor John Cherry (23 February 1948 – 29 April 2020) was an English footballer who notably captained both England and Leeds United. A defender, Cherry also played for Huddersfield Town and Bradford City, and managed the latter club. Born in Huddersfield, he started his career at his hometown team before he made his name at Leeds United during the 1970s, making 486 appearances and winning the Championship title in 1973–74. The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. James Joseph Nicholson (born 27 February 1943 in Belfast) is a Northern Irish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He played most of his career at Huddersfield Town and earned more than 40 caps for the Northern Ireland national team.
