1969 New Hebridean General Election
General elections were held in the New Hebrides in July and August 1969 to elect fourteen members of the thirty members of the Advisory Council. Background In 1968 proposals were approved to increase the size of the Advisory Council from 26 to 30 members. Shepherd Islands
The Shepherd Islands (coordinates ) are a group of islands lying between the larger islands of Epi and Éfaté, in the Shefa province of Vanuatu. The aggregate land area is . They were named by Captain Cook after Anthony Shepherd, a British astronomer and friend of Cook. From north to south, the principal islands are: Laika, Tongoa (Kuwaé), Buninga (Mbining), Ewose, Falea, Tongariki (Atong), Émaé (Mai), Makura (Emwae), Mataso (Matah), and Monument (Étarik). Émaé and Tongoa are the largest islands in the group. The region includes two submarine volcanoes, Kuwae and Makura. The islands are principally in the outlines of the calderas of these volcanoes. Sir Colin Hamilton Allan (23 October 1921 – 5 March 1993) was a New Zealander who spent most of his professional life in the British administration of their overseas territories. He was the last Governor of the Solomon Islands from 1976 to 1978, prior to their independence. Early life Allan was born in Wellington on 23 October 1921. He was the son of John Calder Allan and Mabel Eastwood. He was educated at the Cambridge Primary School and Hamilton High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Canterbury University College in 1943 and then graduated Master of Arts in 1945. He also obtained a Diploma in Anthropology from Magdalene College, Cambridge. Biography Personal life Abbil is from Tanna island, which is located in Vanuatu's southernmost Tafea Province. He was born in the village of Louaneai on Tanna in the New Hebrides in 1942 to parents George Yaviniau and Nassuaiu. His father originally owned his own store, but closed the business after Iolu later suggested the family join a business cooperative.
