1969 NAIA World Series
The 1969 NAIA World Series was the 13th annual tournament hosted by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to determine the national champion of baseball among its member colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The tournament was played at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph, Missouri. William Carey (29-9) defeated La Verne (38-16) in the championship series, 5–3, to win the Crusaders' first NAIA World Series. As of 2024, this is the earliest NAIA baseball championship won by a school that remains at the NAIA level. La Verne pitcher Steve Barber was named tournament MVP. Double Elimination
A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only ''one'' defeat results in elimination. One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the competitors into two sets of brackets, the ''winners' bracket'' and ''losers' bracket'' (''W'' and ''L'' brackets for short; also referred to as ''championship bracket'' and ''elimination bracket'', ''upper bracket'' and ''lower bracket'', or ''main bracket'' and ''repechage'') after the first round. The first-round winners proceed into the W bracket and the losers proceed into the L bracket. The W bracket is conducted in the same manner as a single-elimination tournament, except that the losers of each round "drop down" into the L bracket. The Appalachian State Mountaineers baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, United States. The team is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, which is part of NCAA Division I.
