The Taichung Little League of Taichung City, Taiwan, defeated the Briarwood Little League of Santa Clara, California, in the championship game of the 23rd Little League World Series. Little League World Series (South Region)
The South Region was a region that competed in the Little League World Series between 1957 and 2000 until it was split into the Southwest and Southeast regions in 2001. The South Region was inaugurated in 1957. The Region originally consisted of teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. In 1957, the Industrial Little League of Monterrey, Mexico won the South Region championship before Latin America was given its own berth starting with the 1958 LLWS. In 1968, Delaware and Maryland moved to the East Region. In 2000, Oklahoma replaced Kentucky in the region for one year before the region split into two. Taitung Red Leaves
The Taitung Red Leaves (As "Red Leaf" is the name of the village translated to English, they may also be referenced with the transliterated Chinese "Hongye.") was a little league baseball team from Hongye, Yanping Township, Taitung, Taiwan. In August 1968, the Red Leaves swept 7-0 to beat an all-star youth team from Japan. This win is commonly cited as the starting point of baseball fever in Taiwan, resulting in the win of the Taichung Golden Dragons the following year at the 1969 Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania and culminating in Taiwan's continued successes at the Little League World Series. Carney Lansford
Carney Ray Lansford (born February 7, 1957) is an American former professional baseball player and coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a third baseman from 1978 to 1992, most notably as a member of the Oakland Athletics team that won three consecutive American League pennants and a World Series championship in . He also played for the California Angels and the Boston Red Sox. Lansford was the 1981 American League batting champion as a member of the Red Sox and was an American League All-Star in 1988 with the Athletics. Extra innings is the extension of a baseball or softball game in order to break a tie. Ordinarily, a baseball game consists of nine regulation innings (in softball and high school baseball games there are typically seven innings; in Little League Baseball, six), each of which is divided into halves: the visiting team bats first, after which the home team takes its turn at bat. The Latin America Region has competed in the Little League World Series since its creation in 1958.In 1957, the Industrial Little League of Monterrey, Mexico, was the first team from outside the U.S. and Canada to compete in the LLWS. The West Region is one of ten United States regions that currently send teams to the Little League World Series, the largest youth baseball competition in the world.
