1969 English Greyhound Derby
The 1969 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 28 June 1969 at White City Stadium. The winner was Sand Star and the winning owner Hamilton Orr received £7,252. Final result At White City (over 525 yards): Distances 2, 1½, 1, 5, 4 (lengths) The distances between the greyhounds are in finishing order and shown in lengths. From 1950 one length was equal to 0.08 of one second. Competition Report Yellow Printer headed the entry for the Derby for the second consecutive year; he was priced at a short 8-1 ahead of Flaming King and Winter Hope at 16-1. Other market leaders included last year’s finalist Shady Begonia, Finolas Yarn (the recent winner of the Callanan Cup but now representing owner Cyril Young and Tommy Johnston at Wembley) and Sand Star kennelled with Eric and Gwen Adkins in Northampton and looked after by kennelmaid Barbara Tompkins. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Only four greyhounds have won the event twice, Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk. Trainer Charlie Lister OBE has won the event a record seven times. Walthamstow Stadium
Walthamstow Stadium was a greyhound racing track in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in east London.BBC News - Walthamstow race track to close' It was regarded as the leading greyhound racing stadium in Britain following the closure of White City in 1984. The stadium closed on 16 August 2008. By 1929 the ground hosted greyhound racing for the first time and was known as the Crooked Billet Greyhound and whippet track (named after the nearby Crooked Billet public house). The 1969 UK & Ireland Greyhound Racing Year was the 43rd year of greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Roll of honour Summary The Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) granted an option to Stock Conversion and Investment Ltd, for the purchase of greyhound racing's premier track White City Stadium for redevelopment. The official line was that a new modern White City stadium would be built in the remaining four acres from the existing 16 acres. However reporter Neil Martin stated "this move must spell death to all sport there in time – and in my opinion greyhound racing too". Fellow reporter John Bower had a different view, in that it would create a wonderful new stadium, a view seemingly given substance by the GRA, who announced that the architects plans were already drawn up. Callanan Cup
The Callanan Cup was a leading greyhound racing competition held annually at Harold's Cross Stadium in the city district of Harold's Cross, Dublin, Ireland. It was inaugurated after the Second World War and was used by many leading connections as a warm up competition to the Irish Greyhound Derby The Irish Greyhound Derby held at Shelbourne Park, is the premier greyhound racing competition in Ireland. First held at Harold's Cross in 1928, the event was unofficial until 1932 and called the National Derby. The first winner in 1928 was Tip .... It was a major competition and was an integral part of the Irish greyhound racing calendar and was set up in memory of Arthur 'Doc' Callanan after he died in October 1945. Yellow Printer
Yellow Printer was a famous racing greyhound during the late 1960s. He is regarded as being the one of the fastest racing greyhounds in history and won Ireland's ultimate prize, the Irish Greyhound Derby, in addition to being voted the 1968 UK Greyhound of the Year. Mating and rearing He was whelped in March 1966, from a mating between Printer's Prince and Yellow Streak. Racing 1967 After losing in the final of the Ulster St Leger Paddy Keane paid a four figure sum to buy Yellow Printer. He was later bought by Miss Pauline Wallis (a night club proprietor) and Sir Robert Adeane and placed with trainer John Bassett at Clapton. 1968 After competing in the Easter Cup at Shelbourne Park, he won the Wood Lane Stakes at White City. White City Stadium
White City Stadium was a stadium located in White City, London, England. Built for the 1908 Summer Olympics, it hosted the finish of the first modern marathon and other sports like swimming, speedway, boxing, show jumping, athletics, stock car racing, concerts and a match at the 1966 World Cup. George Curtis (greyhound Trainer)
Frederick George Curtis known as George Curtis (21 September 1923 – 17 April 2020) was an English greyhound trainer. He was a three times UK champion Greyhound Trainer of the Year. Profile Curtis started as a kennelhand at Portsmouth Stadium with trainer Bill Peters in 1937 at the age of 14, and received his first National Greyhound Racing Club trainer's licence in 1944. The first classic race success of his career came with Fawn Mack during the 1950 St Leger whilst attached to Park Royal Stadium. A move to Brighton Stadium from Portsmouth in 1967 catapulted Curtis into continued success, his position at Portsmouth was taken by his brother Charlie. He trained a greyhound in two Derby finals, Hard Held in the 1969 English Greyhound Derby and Sirius in the 1970 English Greyhound Derby. Jack Harvey (greyhound Trainer)
Harry 'Jack' Harvey (1907–1996) was an English greyhound trainer. He was the UK champion trainer and two times winner of the English Greyhound Derby. Early life Born near Rugby, Warwickshire, he attended his first coursing meeting with three of his own dogs which he slipped himself aged just ten years old. Harvey stayed in Paris in 1927 picking a job up as a greyhound trainer there before returning the following year. Harvey became an assistant trainer to Jack Chadwick at the opening of White City in 1927. Career His first trainers licence was at Belle Vue Stadium before he moved to Harringay Stadium in the early thirties. It was whilst attached to Harringay that he won the 1934 English Greyhound Derby with Davesland. After building a large kennel he joined Wembley in 1937.
