1969 Australian Open – Men's Singles
Rod Laver defeated Andrés Gimeno in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1969 Australian Open. It was his eighth Grand Slam tournament singles title, and the first step in an eventual Grand Slam for Laver. This was the first edition of the Australian Open to be open to professional players, marking a period in tennis history known as the Open Era. Rod Laver
Rodney George Laver (born 9 August 1938) is an Australian former professional tennis player. Laver was ranked as the World number 1 ranked male tennis players, world number 1 professional player indisputably for five years from 1965 to 1969, and by some sources also in 1964 and 1970. He was also ranked as the number 1 amateur in 1961 and 1962. Laver won 200 singles titles across his amateur and professional careers, the most won by any tennis player. Laver won 11 Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, Grand Slam tournament singles titles and 8 Major professional tennis tournaments before the Open Era, Pro major titles. He completed the Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam (winning all four majors in a calendar year) in singles twice, in 1962 and 1969; the latter remains the only time a man has done so in the Open Era. Roy Emerson
Roy Stanley Emerson (born 3 November 1936) is an Australian former tennis player who won 12 Grand Slam singles titles and 16 Grand Slam doubles titles, for a total of 28 Grand Slam titles. All of his singles Grand Slam victories and 14 of his Grand Slam doubles victories were achieved before the open era began in 1968. He is the only male player to have completed a career Grand Slam (winning titles at all four Grand Slam events) in both singles and doubles, and the first of four male players to complete a double career Grand Slam in singles (later followed by Rod Laver, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal). Dick Crealy
Richard Crealy (born 18 September 1944) is an Australian former tennis player most notable for reaching the final of the Australian Open in 1970, being a member of the 1970 Australian Davis Cup Team, and winning four Grand Slam titles in doubles. Tennis career Crealy was born in Sydney in 1944. In 1968 he achieved his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open with his fellow countryman and team mate Allan Stone in doubles. He also won the mixed doubles with Billie Jean King. Crealy won the Men's Doubles at the 1974 French Open with Onny Parun over Stan Smith and Bob Lutz. Raymond J. "Ray" Moore (born 24 August 1946) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa. In June 1966 he won the East Gloucestershire Championships at Cheltenham on grass, defeating Tom Okker and Dick Crealy in the final two rounds. Jean-Loup Rouyer
Jean-Loup Rouyer (4 August 1945 - 28 December 2007) was a professional tennis player from France. Biography Born in Remiremont, Rouyer began playing tennis at the age of 12. He was a graduate of the École Polytechnique in 1965. Tennis career Rouyer represented the France Davis Cup team in three doubles rubbers, which all came in the 1970 Davis Cup competition with Jean-Baptiste Chanfreau, against Switzerland, Austria and Spain. They won two of those matches, over the Swiss pairing of Dimitri Sturdza/Matthias Werren and Austrians Hans Kary/ Peter Pokorny. In 1971 he made the quarter-finals of Grand Prix tournaments in Catania and Eastbourne, then in 1972 reached further quarter-finals at the Italian Open in Rome and the Suisse Open Gstaad. Howard Hunt (tennis)
Everette Howard Hunt Jr. (October 9, 1918 – January 23, 2007) was an American intelligence officer and author. From 1949 to 1970, Hunt served as an officer in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where he was a central figure in U.S. regime change in Latin America including the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état and the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba. Along with G. Gordon Liddy, Frank Sturgis, and others, Hunt was one of the Nixon administration's so-called White House Plumbers, a team of operatives charged with identifying government leaks to outside parties. Hunt and Liddy plotted the Watergate burglaries and other clandestine operations for the Nixon administration. In the Watergate scandal, Hunt was convicted of burglary, conspiracy, and wiretapping, and was sentenced to 33 months in prison. Allan Stone (born 14 October 1945) is a former tennis player from Australia. He played amateur and professional tennis in the 1960s and 1970s. He was ranked as high as world No. 36 in singles and world No. 12 in doubles on the ATP rankings. After his playing career, Stone became a sports commentator.
