1969 Amateur World Series
The 1969 Amateur World Series was an international baseball tournament held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 15 through August 26, 1969. The competition marked the first time the United States national baseball team, United States participated in the Amateur World Series since the 1942 Amateur World Series, 1942 tournament. Cuba national baseball team, Cuba and the US were both 9-0 when they met in the finals, with Cuba winning 2–1. Gaspar Pérez was the winning pitcher for Cuba and also drove in their first run to tie the game and scored the second, decisive run. Most of the 20,000 fans who watched the finals were pro-Cuba, reportedly due to lingering resentment from the 1965 United States occupation of the Dominican Republic (1965–66), US invasion of the Dominican Republic. The 1965 Amateur World Series was an international baseball tournament held in Cartagena, Colombia from February 12 through February 27, 1965. It was the 16th Amateur World Series. The Cuban national team was denied a chance to defend its title as Colombia, then run by a right-wing regime, refused to grant visas to Cuba's players. Estadio Quisqueya
Quisqueya Stadium Juan Marichal is a baseball stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is often used as a multi-use stadium. Football club Atlético Pantoja used the venue for their inaugural Caribbean football championship match. The Quisqueya holds about 14,469 people after its renovation. The Dominican League of Baseball Authority is in charge of its management. It is the only stadium in the Caribbean region to host two different baseball teams, Tigres del Licey (''Licey Tigers'') and Leones del Escogido (''Chosen One Lions''). Its field dimensions are 335 feet at the foul poles, 383 feet at the power alleys, and 411 feet at center field. It was built in 1955 as Estadio Trujillo, during the Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina dictatorship, taking the Bobby Maduro Miami Stadium as the design base. Earned Run Average
In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game). It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine. Thus, a lower ERA is better. Runs resulting from passed balls or defensive errors (including pitchers' defensive errors) are recorded as unearned runs and omitted from ERA calculations.
