Ligue 2 (, League 2), also known as Ligue 2 BKT due to sponsor (commercial), sponsorship by Balkrishna Industries, is a French professional football league. The league serves as the second division of French football and is one of two divisions making up the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the other being Ligue 1, the country's top football division. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with both Ligue 1 and the third division Championnat National. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 games each, totalling 380 games in the season. Most games are played on Fridays and Mondays, with a few games played during weekday and weekend evenings. Play is regularly suspended the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks before returning in the second week of January. Avenir Club Avignonnais, known simply as Avignon, is a football club based in the city of Avignon, France. The club notably competed in the Division 1 in the 1975–76 season. History The club was founded in 1931 as Association Sportive Avignonnaise and played professionally from 1942 until 1948. The club was later renamed Olympique Avignonnais in a merger with Saint-Jean and became professional again in 1965. In 1975, the team was promoted to Division 1, after winning a playoff match against FC Rouen. However, the 1975–1976 season was disastrous, as the club finished bottom with 20 Points, 7 victories, 6 draws, 25 defeats, with 30 goals scored and 80 goals conceded. The club was relegated from Division 2 in 1976 and had to forgo its professional status in 1981 due to financial problems.
