John Shea (New Hampshire Politician)
John D. Shea was a New Hampshire Democratic politician who represented District 2 in the New Hampshire Executive Council from 2006 to 2010. Shea was elected to the Council in 2006, defeating 12-term incumbent Peter Spaulding. He benefited from robust support for the Democrats in New Hampshire's 2006 elections, which saw the party take both of the state's Congressional seats and win control of both houses of the state legislature. The victory came as a surprise to Shea, who put his name forward mainly so that there would be a Democratic name on the ballot, and did not expect to win. He departed on election night for a two-week vacation in Belgium, only learning of his victory after arriving at his hotel the following day. United States gubernatorial elections were held on 5 November 1968, in 21 states and one territory, concurrent with the House, Senate elections and presidential election. These were the last gubernatorial elections for Arizona, New Mexico, and Wisconsin to take place in a presidential election year, as all would extend their governors' terms from two to four years. Arizona Jack Richard Williams won re-election against Samuel Pearson Goddard Jr., in a "rematch" election, in which Goddard was trying to get his old job back. This was basically a repeat of the 1966 Arizona governor's race, with Williams winning. Meldrim Thomson Jr
Meldrim Thomson Jr. (March 8, 1912 – April 19, 2001) was an American politician who served three terms as the 73rd governor of New Hampshire from 1973 to 1979. A Republican, he was known as a strong supporter of conservative political values. Early life Thomson was born in 1912 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Meldrim and Marion (Booth) Thomson, and was raised in Georgia and Florida. He was an Eagle Scout. Thomson attended Mercer University, Washington and Jefferson College, and the University of Georgia School of Law and was admitted to the practice of law in Florida in 1936. In 1938, he married his secretary, Anne Gale Kelly, and together they had six children. Thomson made his fortune publishing law books. Wesley Powell (October 13, 1915January 6, 1981) was an American lawyer and Republican politician from Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Powell was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He attended schools in Portsmouth before graduating from the University of New Hampshire. He received his law degree from the Southern Methodist College of Law in 1940.
