The 1968 National Challenge Cup was the 55th edition of the United States Soccer Football Association's annual open soccer championship. No North American Soccer League teams played in the tournament because it was during the offseason and it was when National Professional Soccer League and United Soccer Association were merging at the time. In the end, New York Greek American Atlas F.C. won its second of three straight National Cups. NY Greek American Atlas Astoria, commonly known as New York Greek American, is an American soccer team from New York City that currently plays in the Eastern Premier Soccer League and in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. The club was formed in 1946 by Thomas Laris and is one of the most successful clubs in America's annual national soccer tournament, the U.S. Open Cup, winning four times, in 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1974. Harmarville Hurricanes
The Harmarville Hurricanes Soccer Club were an amateur soccer club from Harmarville, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, that twice won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, known then as the National Challenge Cup, in 1952 and 1956. They also played in the Cup Final in 1953. The team was owned by the Harmar Coal Company. Many of the players worked in the coal industry in addition to playing for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes beat the American Soccer League's Philadelphia Nationals 7-5 in the 1952 cup final with the winning goal scored by Sonny Yakopec. The 1956 Final saw the Hurricanes win 3–2 on aggregate score after a comeback from a two-goal deficit. They lost the first leg on the road 1–0 and conceded the first goal in the return home leg. United Soccer Association
The United Soccer Association was a professional soccer league featuring teams based in the United States and Canada. The league survived only one season before merging with the National Professional Soccer League to form the North American Soccer League. Every team in the league was actually an imported European or South America club, that was then outfitted with a "local" name. Dick Walsh served as the commissioner. Origins In 1966 a group of sports entrepreneurs, led by Jack Kent Cooke and including Lamar Hunt and Steve Stavro, formed a consortium known as the North American Soccer League with the intention of forming a professional soccer league in North America. This group was subsequently sanctioned by both the USSFA and FIFA. However a rival consortium known as the National Professional Soccer League also emerged and to avoid confusion Cooke renamed his consortium the United Soccer Association.
