Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Paal Flaata
Pål Flåta (born 8 April 1968) is a Norwegian vocalist, known from the band Midnight Choir and as a solo artist. Career Flaata was born in Skien, Norway. He started his career in the Skien band Memphis News and has since then been involved in Paal & Pål Band with Pål Jensen, Carsten "Kesh" Holt, and Vidar Busk. In the early 1990s, Flaata traveled to Oslo along with two other musicians. There, they played hillbilly music on the street and were called the Hashbrowns. Then the band got a record deal, and went to the US to record an album. Hashbrowns was then transformed to Midnight Choir. Flaata was in the forefront of Midnight Choir, until the band was dissolved in 2004, and was involved in the outlet of five albums plus a compilation. He debuted as a solo artist in 2002 with ''In Demand'' and continued as a solo artist after the dissolution of Midnight Choir. Jon Øivind Ness, (born 30 March 1968) is a Norwegian contemporary composer. Career During his career, Ness won a 1994 prize from the Norwegian Society of Composers. Euronymous
Øystein Aarseth (; 22 March 1968 – 10 August 1993), better known by his stage name Euronymous, was a Norwegian musician and a founder of and central figure in the early Norwegian black metal scene. He was a co-founder and guitarist of the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem and was the only constant member from the band's formation in 1984 until his death in 1993. He was also founder and owner of the extreme metal record label Deathlike Silence Productions and record shop Helvete. Euronymous professed to being a theistic Satanist and was known for making extreme misanthropic statements. He presented himself as leading a militant cult-like group known as the "Black Metal Inner Circle". In August 1993, he was killed by fellow musician and former bandmate Varg Vikernes. Arve Henriksen (born 22 March 1968) is a Norwegian trumpeter. Career Henriksen was born in Stranda and educated on the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium; he later studied music pedagogy, while he played in «Bodega Band» (1987–88), «Luft» (1987–89), « Veslefrekk» from 1989, «Close Enough» 1990–92, «Nutrio» from 1990, and recorded with Bjørn Alterhaug and «Tre Små Kinesere» (1990). After graduating in 1991, he joined the «Trio Midt-Norge» and «Piggy Bop». Per Oddvar Johansen (born 1 March 1968) is a Norwegian Jazz musician (drummer), most recognized for his work with Trygve Seim, Christian Wallumrød, The Source, Solveig Slettahjell and Vigleik Storaas, but has also been awarded the Spellemannprisen five times. Sigurd Slåttebrekk (born 6 January 1968) is a Norway, Norwegian european classical music, classical pianist. Born in Stavanger, Norway, Slåttebrekk is acclaimed for his recordings of works by Maurice Ravel and Robert Schumann. He received his earliest piano training from his mother, Karin Slåttebrekk, and Ingeborg Songe-Møller. He continued his studies under Einar Steen-Nøkleberg at the Norwegian Academy of Music and Jerome Lowenthal at the Juilliard School and with Lazar Berman. In 1997, he decided to stop giving concerts, but after a hiatus of seven years, he made his comeback at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival in August 2002.
